OTHER GOALS OF RESIDENCE
HALL LIFE . . .
The value of the concept of preventing crime through environmental
design comes from the fact that it is
not merely a security shopping list
or a one-size-fits-all list of strategies.
Rather, solutions are structured to fit
the needs and conditions of a specific place or community. To that end,
when architects consider the available
security strategies, they place them
into one of the seven CPTED concepts. As reviewed by Paul Cozens and
Terence Love, these are geographical
juxtaposition, target hardening, access
control, territorial reinforcement, surveillance, legitimate activity support,
and image management.
Geographical juxtaposition is a
broad concept that works at the macro
level and often is utilized in urban
planning, where adjacent spaces and
elements reinforce feelings of security.
Gene McDonald, a principal at HED
Design, offers The Village at the University of Southern California in Los
Angeles as an example. The concentrated area contains nearly 2,500 beds
(as well as academic, recreation, and
retail spaces) and features an almost
symmetrical design, divided by a
central walkway. Because the buildings
face each other, McDonald explains, it
"creates a natural sense of security" as
"students can see and be seen."
