The laundry room in the University of Missouri's Dobbs Residence Hall includes large windows
and glass doors to provide transparency. In addition, a camera is mounted in the ceiling corner
and a center washing machine island is open on both sides to prevent dead ends that could
trap an individual.

At a more micro level, target hardening is the most straightforward security approach, manifesting in physical
barriers like high fences, imposing
security doors, and sturdy locks. While
no one would suggest forgoing locks
on doors, many CPTED disciples argue
that excessive use of these features can
actually damage the community spirit
and cooperation that the approach
is supposed to nurture. More subtle
deterrent strategies include access
control and territorial reinforcement.
Clear signage, for example, can guide
residents and their visitors to where
they should be (elevators, workout center, study lounge, etc.) and away from
where they shouldn't ("Staff Only Beyond This Point" or "Warning, Alarm
Will Sound" signs). Controlled entry
points to the building and purposeful
design can help to lead arrivals past
the lobby desks, which act as security

often are designed to look like welcome centers for residents.
Even more subtle approaches,
such as changes in floor coverings,
can denote when a person transitions
from one of Newman's designated
spaces into another, such as public to
semi-private. Laura Krinke, the public
relations manager for Stantec architects, explains how breaking student
housing down into smaller communities helps form interpersonal bonds as
well as improve security. "The human
brain has a certain level of memory:
people they know and people they can
simply recognize. We study this in
detail and right-size our communities
appropriately to provide spaces that are
not only safe and secure, but have a
strong sense of comfort to the residents by knowing who should be there
and who should not."

Wide staircases at the University of Iowa's
Elizabeth Catlett Hall allow open communication
between floors as well as helping manage
multiple points of entry.

Understanding and clarifying the
role of different spaces within the residence hall is another valuable strategy.
Supporting legitimate activities encourages acceptable behaviors in public
spaces. The space not only supports its
intended function, but also provides
