The foundations of success Croatia’s central position at the crossroads of Europe and its long tradition in creative science are the basis for a potentially huge pharmaceutical industry. On the verge of becoming the 28th member of the EU, the country is preparing to establish itself as the new European capital of pharmaceutical and biotechnology investments. Nikola Tesla revolutionized the disciplines of electricity and magnetism in the late nineteenth century, but even before then Croats were demonstrating their inventive natures: Fausto Veranzio created the first successful parachute in the 1600s and David Schwarz invented the dirigible airship in 1896. This trend in unique research has continued right through to the present day; one example being Marin Soljacic’s research into wireless technology and a discovery that could provide a possible way to charge mobile phones and other electronic devices wirelessly. Innovation has always been important in the pharmaceutical industry, but it is something that companies are now placing even greater emphasis on. Croatia’s largest pharmaceutical company, Pliva (Zagreb), which specializes in the development, production and distribution of generic drugs, uses innovation as one of its fundamental values.1 Its importance is also backed by regulatory bodies such as FDA in the cGMP initiative Pharmaceutical cGMPs for the 21 Century, where the agency explains the need for companies to employ originality when responding to new challenges.2 Workforce and location According to a report by Business Monitor International (BMI), the value of Croatia’s pharmaceutical market is expected to reach €465 million by 2010.3 After a period of accelerated growth — up to 15% annually — a standard growth rate of 7–9% is expected during the next few years.
