Meeting Preview The Column www.thecolumn.eu.com May 2008 25th Montreux Symposium on LC–MS The silver anniversary of one of the leading conferences on liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) will be held in Montreux, Switzerland from 12–14 November 2008. The 25th Montreux Symposium on LC–MS will take place from 12–14 November 2008. The constantly evolving nature of LC–MS is reflected by the participation of scientists from 30 different countries with scientific contributions from a wide variety of research and development disciplines, including the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, food and environmental sectors. Research involving novel instrumentation and new LC–MS fields, such as nanotechnology, ultraperformance liquid chromatography (UPLC), low flow-rate spray techniques, proteomics and systems biology will also be covered. A special session in this rapidly emerging field has been organized in collaboration with the Metabolomics Society. The Roland W. Frei opening lecture will be delivered by Professor Ruedi Aebersold from ETH Zurich in Germany. He will discuss LC–MS–MS Methods for the Discovery and Measurement of the Proteome. Professor Jack Henion, a pioneer of LC–MS, will cover The History and Future Outlook for LC–MS. Quality of Life, an Integrated Future of Medicine and Nutrition research: challenges for LC–MS technology will be addressed by Professor Jan van der Greef from TNO Quality of Life and the LACDR at Leiden University in The Netherlands. Aerosol–Cloud–Climate Interactions: Possibilities and Limits of Off-line and On-line Mass Spectrometric Techniques will be presented by Professor Thorsten Hoffmann from the University of Johannes GutenbergUniversität Mainz in Germany. Professor Karl-Siegfried Boos, head of the Laboratory of BioSeparation at the Institute of Clinical Chemistry, Medical Center of the University of Munich, Germany, will give a lecture titled A revolution in tailor-made LC for LC–MS: POPLC? Professor Age Smilde will give a lecture on LC–MS and Multivariate Analysis: A Happy Marriage? Improving the Analytical Strategies for Metabolomics will be the topic of a lecture by Professor Thomas Hankemeier from the LACDR and Netherlands Metabolomics Centre (NBC) at Leiden University. A large variety of poster sessions and other oral talks will be a core part of this interesting programme, which is important to anyone working with LC–MS. The International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEC) will be conferring the Roland W. Frei Award for the best poster presentation by a young scientist. The exhibition is a vital part of the conference and some of the major companies involved in LC–MS will be present to describe novel concepts and instruments. A special vendor session on the latest news is also part of the programme. A series of short courses are running from 10–11 November 2008. These introductory courses are designed to stimulate newcomers to the world of LC–MS, interpretation, sample pretreatment and multivariate statistics/chemometrics. Montreux has unquestionable charm and is a perfect setting for combining science, business and pleasure.
