Daily natural gas production in canada, half of which is exported to the United states, has fallen from about 16 Bcf/d day to less than 13 Bcf/d in less than five years. Both domestic use and the struggle to sustain production may significantly limit future exports to the United states. The U.s. LnG import capacity of 14 Bcf/d has never been fully utilized. Future use depends on world market conditions, supply-demand balances in europe and Asia as well as the United states, relative pricing throughout the world and other factors outside the control of U.s. trading partners. many analysts believe that the start of construction of a pipeline connecting Alaskan Shale gaS is only one of a variety of sources contributing to an abundant natural gas supply in north America, an AGA study concludes. The study, U.S. Natural Gas Supply: Then There Was Abundance, says that “the facts point to a versatile and competitive energy source poised to meet existing and incremental future demands for residential, commercial, industrial, power generation and transportation applications.” This strong natural gas supply picture “is not only founded on the abundance of methane to be found in north America but also [on] the diversity of these supplies,” the report says. “America will not demonstrate a secure, reliable supply of natural gas to meet a lower-carbon future based solely on potential shale gas, for example,” it continues. “That security and reliability will come from all of the domestic supply sources available, including onshore unconventional, deepwater, subsalt, Arctic gas, tight sands in the intermountain West, LnG [liquefied natural gas] and a seemingly endless list of other options. “it will be dependent on infrastructure growth associated with pipelines and underground storage, and it will be dependent on effective regulatory and policy measures that protect all interests in securing a stronger domestic energy future,” the report says.
