In addition, 20 years ago global trade in LNG was 50 million tons per annum (mtpa), or about 3 percent of the world market. Today, global LNG trade is about 200 mtpa, or about 9 percent of the world’s natural gas market. Global supply has been growing at between 7–10 percent per year. A Meeting of the Minds Under the auspices of three internationally recognized organizations—the Oslo, Norway-based International Gas Union (IGU), the Chicago-based Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and the Paris, France-based International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR)—AGA is serving as the host and National Organizing Committee (NOC) for LNG 17. AGA Chairman-elect John Somerhalder, chairman, president and CEO of AGL Resources, is serving as chairman of the NOC, and David Carroll, president of GTI, is serving as chairman of the LNG 17 Steering Committee. Other key members of the team include the chairman of the program committee, Nirmal “Chat” Chatterjee, who recently retired as corporate vice president, EH&S (environmental, health and safety) and engineering, at Air Products Inc. Chatterjee, who has participated in 14 LNG events during his career, heads a committee of more than 40 individuals from a variety of global companies involved in LNG. Past AGA Chairman David McClanahan, president and CEO of CenterPoint Energy in Houston, is chairman of the event’s Houston Host Committee, and former U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham is chairman of the LNG 17 National Advisory Committee. “Houston is really an ideal city to be hosting this event,” says McClanahan. “As LNG 17 illustrates, the natural gas industry is now a global industry, and Houston is a city very conducive to conducting business on a global scale. Houston has direct flights from 66 international cities, there are 90 foreign consulates in the city and more than 100 different languages are spoken.” Jay Copan, executive director for LNG 17, cites another AmericAn GAs NOVEMBER 2010 “As the world’s largest consumer of natural gas, America is a fitting host country for LNG 17,” says AGA President and CEO David Parker, “and as the trade association representing America’s natural gas utility industry AGA is both proud and honored to serve as the host association. We believe LNG 17 will be the most successful global LNG conference ever.” A Growing Opportunity The global LNG business continues to grow dramatically thanks to the increased worldwide recognition that natural gas can play a very important role in meeting the world’s energy needs, while at the same time addressing climate change concerns. During the past 20 years, the number of LNG-exporting nations has grown from seven to 17, led by the top three exporting nations, Qatar, Malaysia and Indonesia. Conversely, in the past 10 years the number of importing nations has grown from 12 to 21, with Japan, Korea and 15
