Decision Time
A look at the candidates’ positions—and records— on issues of concern to the natural gas industry.
In the July issue of American Gas, three energy association leaders—R. Skip Horvath of the Natural Gas Supply Association, Dave McCurdy of the American Gas Association, and Barry Russell of the Independent Petroleum Association of America—discussed some of the key issues related to natural gas on which, from their perspectives, this year’s presidential election turns. Among their concerns: regulations (tied to, among other things, pipelines, hydraulic fracturing, and natural gas vehicles), taxes, balancing economic development with environmental protection, and the need for an overall national energy policy. We asked the two campaign organizations to tell us about their candidate’s positions on these and other industry issues. Governor Romney’s campaign submitted the position paper that starts on page 33. President Obama’s campaign was not able to respond to our request in time for publication, so we asked one of our writers, Sue Khodarahmi, to take a look at the administration’s record on natural gas policy over the last four years; her report, as well as links to some of her sources, appears on page 34.
