Saved by CHP Community keeps power after Sandy BRONX, NY — Interest in combined heat and power plants for residential communities has spiked since last fall, when Hurricane Sandy left much of New York without electricity—except for Co-Op City. The 330-acre, 60,000-resident Bronx community never lost power during the superstorm, thanks to its onsite 40 megawatt combined heat and power plant. Combined heat and power plants—also called cogeneration plants—create both electrical and thermal energy from a single fuel source. When CoOp City owners announced they were building the natural gas turbine system in 2008, they cited its financial and environmental advantages over their old fuel-oil system. presented by But when residents of this 14,000-unit moderate-income community stayed warm and comfortable in Sandy’s wake while many in the Northeast suffered for weeks, it caught people’s attention. Because these combined heat and power systems typically are fueled by natural gas that’s piped underground, they can more easily withstand weather catastrophes, Thomas G. Bourgeois, deputy director of Pace University’s Energy and Climate Center, told American Gas. And that’s an attractive feature for many, especially those who expect more superstorms in the future. “Appropriately designed and configured CHP systems can improve the resiliency of critical infrastructure, provide for business continuity, and serve as an important component of an emergency planning and preparedness strategy,” said Bourgeois.
