dvances in American technology have
opened the door to efficient, affordable,
and responsible extraction of natural
gas in North America. Natural gas production from unconventional sources,
such as shale, has grown considerably in
recent years. Proven reserves and yet-tobe-developed resources are enormous,
giving credence to expectations that
natural gas can meet and sustain a significant share of our future
domestic energy needs.
The effects of America’s abundance of natural gas are being
felt throughout the world. In board rooms and seats of government on every continent, people are waiting to see what our
nation’s supply of this clean energy source could mean for the
global marketplace. This discussion continues at the 17th International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas
(LNG 17) taking place in Houston this month. The American
Gas Association is hosting leaders in the global natural gas industry for four days of sessions, workshops, and tours of worldleading LNG facilities. It is the largest global gas event of 2013.
AGA will hold the presidency of the International Gas
Union from 2015 through 2018, facilitating the conversations
that will shape the next decades in the natural gas industry,
including the next World Gas Conference in Washington, D.C.,
in June 2018. During this time, AGA will make a substantial
commitment to developing the natural gas workforce. These
investments, along with the ones we make in our natural gas
infrastructure, will help ensure the legacy of this transformation in American energy and strengthen the foundation of our
energy future.
The many benefits of our domestic abundance of this clean
energy source make it possible to reevaluate every sector of our
economy. Our natural gas abundance is creating a competitive
advantage for petrochemical manufacturers, leading to greater

U.S. investment and industry growth. American chemical
manufacturers rely on ethane, a natural gas liquid, as the raw
material to make the basic building blocks for manufactured
goods that we use every day. The stable price of natural gas is
giving U.S. manufacturers an advantage over foreign competitors that rely on an oil-based raw material. We are witnessing
an American manufacturing renaissance that is encouraging
economic growth, creating new jobs, and making America more
competitive.
In this issue, and in many to come, American Gas explores
the complex dynamics of managing our treasured natural
resources. We preview LNG 17 and look at how natural gas is
redefining what it means to be “Made in America.”
The country has experienced a transformational shift in the
perceived role of natural gas—from an energy source sometimes
seen as unreliable and scarce 10 years ago, to one that is now
recognized as a foundation fuel for a clean and secure energy
portfolio. For the next decade and beyond, domestic natural gas
supplies are expected to be sufficiently robust to meet growth in
demand across all sectors. We believe that the market will find
a balance between the demand for U.S. LNG abroad, burgeoning industries here at home, and continued affordability for the
more than 177 million Americans who rely on clean natural gas
in their homes and businesses. u
