THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL GAS The latest University of Texas Energy Poll surveyed 2,113 adults. Respondents expressed a positive view of natural gas on several fronts. When asked about the impact of domestic natural gas production in the U.S., they cited % seeing as a natural gas benefit jobs, security, business, and environmental benefits. Support for natural gas expansion ranked just above support for financial incentives for renewable energy (60 percent), and significantly higher than policies favoring pipeline construction to carry oil from Canada (44 percent) or increased offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (40 percent). AWARENESS OF/SUPPORT FOR HYDRAULIC FRACTURING Awareness of hydraulic fracturing has grown over the last year. Among those who are familiar with it, views are split—but supporters of this method outnumber opponents, and support has edged up over the past six months. The study also asked specifically about hydraulic fracturing on public lands and found that 41 percent support this practice while 36 percent would like to prohibit it.
