Scratch, Sniff—and EvacuatE?
If you smell something...say something. Though
sometimes it’s not what you expected.
residents of Great Falls, mont., proved recently that they know what
to do when they smell natural gas, after the scent from a batch of old
scratch-and-sniff cards prompted a slew of calls to the local utility. energy
West General manager nick Bohr told American Gas that employees of
the utility had discarded less than two boxes full of the cards—designed
to educate customers to recognize the odor of a gas leak—which dated
back to the 1980s. When the boxes were picked up by a city sanitation
crew at around 7:30 a.m. on may 8, they combined with water from
a recent rainfall to give off an unusually strong odor throughout Great
Falls’ downtown. By 7:45 a.m., energy West’s phone lines were lit up by
concerned citizens, and several buildings were evacuated before it was
quickly confirmed that the cards—and not a gas leak—were to blame.
“The good news is that no one got hurt,” Bohr said. “And, in a way, it
served as a kind of a drill. We’ve actually gotten good community support since it happened.” —Jennifer Pilla Taylor
