Trusteeship - May/June 2020 - 47

VIEW FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Continued from page 46
printed by FIU, using in-house 3-D printers.
I've never been prouder of my Panther family for stepping up to the
challenges posed by the coronavirus. Together, we've managed to create
a sense of normalcy when everything is far from normal.
We've learned that working together, we can face any challenge
that comes our way, and that by remaining calm and intentional, we
can make real strides in the midst of uncertainty. We've learned some
valuable lessons through the last few weeks about our flexibility and our
resilience, and I am confident these are lessons that will carry us not
only through this crisis but through future challenges.

New Books Forthcoming from AGB
Presidential Assessment and Development
By Terrence MacTaggart

In an era during which being a campus or system leader has become more
challenging, the environment more complex, the expectations greater, and
the average leadership tenure in office shorter, Terry MacTaggart offers a
new practical guide to board assessment of presidents that takes these
factors into account while emphasizing the importance of developing the
talent and skills of the incumbent leader. The relationship between board
chairs, board members, and presidents is a leadership compact. Boards
must engage presidents in designing these assessments of their work and
their leadership development programs to create the kind of constructive
feedback that improves that relationship and lifts the performance of senior
leaders and their teams.

The New Realities for Public Higher Education Foundations
Edited by Richard D. Legon

This volume, a follow-up to AGB's Margin of Excellence (2005) with new insights
from leading foundation experts, is focused on the opportunities and risks
foundations face in a dynamic and uncertain higher education environment.
Two central themes are explored: 1) understanding the environmental
conditions in which public institutions are meeting their mission-and how
foundations must be aligned with their institutions to be essential partners,
and 2) sharing specifics about how the work of foundations can safeguard the
higher education value proposition through innovation, sound funding models
and endowment practices, and risk management.
