2018 Winners Twelve structural steel projects have earned a 2018 IDEASĀ² award. Our panel of judges identified National and Merit winners in three categories, based on total constructed value: projects greater than $75 million; projects $15 million to $75 million; and projects less than $15 million. In addition, the panel awarded a Presidential Award of Excellence to one project for adaptive reuse and to one project for erection engineering. This year's winners include a jaw-dropping public transit station at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, a historic-powerplant-turned-office-building in Toledo, a thin office tower with an even thinner base on a small parcel of land in Chicago and projects involving not one, not two but three NFL stadiums- one of them reminiscent of a Viking ship (you'll never guess which team). The winning projects and their respective team members were recognized at the 2018 NASCC: The Steel Conference in Baltimore in April. Awards will be presented to the submitting firms and their fellow project team members at the individual project sites throughout the year. The winning projects are also featured in the May issue of AISC's Modern Steel Construction magazine. We celebrate these projects and appreciate the savvy, creative people behind them for showcasing the beauty and usefulness of structural steel. Our hearty congratulations to the award-winning teams for a great compilation of excellent solutions! -Charles J. Carter, SE, PE, PhD president of AISC 8
