background for standardization of HbA1c instruments worldwide. Despite attempts at international consensus for coreporting, recent years have seen the adoption of IFCC SI units alone for HbA1c reporting by a number of countries in Europe and elsewhere. Other countries, includ- ing the United States, are expected to continue to use DCCT percent units. As Sacks notes in his Diabetes Care article, the two methods are complementary: “The IFCC provides manufacturers with traceability to a standard of higher metrologic order, and the NGSP 60th Annual Advanced Postgraduate Course Preconference Workshop: Advocating on Behalf of the Student with Diabetes February 22, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Hilton New York in New York, N.Y. Many students are currently not safe at school because there is no one available to perform emergency and routine diabetes care tasks. The solution recommended by the ADA and other major diabetes organizations is to train school staff members to perform these tasks when a school nurse is not available. The goal of this workshop is to provide the vital information that health care professionals need to (1) educate the families of their pediatric diabetes patients about their legal rights, and (2) advocate to ensure that the diabetes needs of students are met so that these students have the same education opportunities as their peers. The target audience includes diabetes health care providers, and other health care professionals with an interest in pediatric diabetes care. Continuing education credits will not be offered for this workshop. Learner Objectives At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to: ■ Describe the challenges faced by students with diabetes. ■ Describe relevant federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines. ■ Identify and utilize resources available to help educate patients about their rights and to assist in training school personnel. Each participant will receive a packet of resources. Presenters ■ Linda M. Siminerio, RN, PhD, CDE ■ Crystal C. Jackson, Director, ADA Safe at School Registration If you plan to attend the Postgraduate Course, you can register for the preconference workshop online at the same time. ■ If you plan to register only for the preconference workshop, please send an e-mail indicating your wish to attend, along with your contact information, to Patricia Brouse at PBrouse@diabetes.org. ▲ ■ defines the limits of acceptability for method performance.” Moreover, there is a linear relationship between the values obtained using the two methods, allowing for conversion between DCCT and IFCC units—although it is important to note that a master equation is required to perform this conversion. (A user-friendly converter is available on the NGSP website at ngsp.org/convert1.asp, and instructions to authors for both journals link to this converter.) Diabetes Care Editor-in-Chief William T. Cefalu, MD, and ADA Senior Vice President M. Sue Kirkman, MD, cite the international differences in HbA1c reporting as a central reason for the journal’s new dual-reporting requirement. As they state in their commentary, there is a real concern that young clinicians in some countries may soon not recognize HbA1c in percent DCCT units. They also point out that requiring dual reporting for Diabetes Care and Diabetes makes sense given that the journals have an international readership and authorship. Finally, dual reporting will allow readers to compare HbA1c results in Diabetes Care and Diabetes articles to results in past and future sources using either IFCC or DCCT units. ▲ Editors’ Note: Samuel Rahbar, MD, PhD, who discovered that HbA1c is elevated in people with diabetes, passed away shortly before this issue of the Professional Section Quarterly went to press. The American Diabetes Association would like to express its sincerest condolences to the Rahbar family and Dr. Rahbar’s friends and colleagues at City of Hope, Duarte, Calif. 15 Professional Section Quarterly http://www.ngsp.org/convert1.asp
