A Primer on Payroll in Canada NOTICE OF GROUP TERMINATION Group termination, often referred to as a mass layoff, results from the closure of a plant or section of a plant, office or other business site due to financial loss, sale/merger of the company or relocation of the operation. To protect the worker in this situation, which is beyond their control, legislation has been enacted to minimize the workers' dislocation. A group termination occurs when a number of employees are having their employment terminated within a certain defined period of time. The following chart and notes explain the employer's notice requirements for group terminations in the various jurisdictions. If there is no legislation for group termination, the legislation regarding individual terminations applies.
