U.S. Gas, Oil Reserves Increase In 2013
WASHINGTON-The United States
increased its proved natural gas reserves
9.7 percent in 2013, reaching a record
354 trillion cubic feet, the U.S. Energy
Information Administration says. Oil producers also increased proved reserves for
the fifth straight year.
In its annual report, U.S. Crude Oil and
Natural Gas Proved Reserves, 2013, which
was published in December, EIA points
out the jump in natural gas reserves more
than replaced the 7.0 percent reserves
decline seen in 2012. Pennsylvania and
West Virginia accounted for 70.0 percent
of the increase, driven by continued development of the Marcellus Shale. Combined,
the two states added 21.8 Tcf in 2013,
with 13.5 Tcf coming from Pennsylvania.
An increase in natural gas prices contributed to the jump in proved natural
gas reserves, EIA says. It points to the
12-month, first-of-the-month average spot
gas price at the Henry Hub increasing
from $2.75 an MMBtu in 2012 to $3.66
an MMBtu in 2013 as one example.
Proved natural gas reserves declined between 2011 and 2012 as gas prices fell
from $4.15 an MMBtu in 2011, it says.
In 2013, the report details, proved gas
reserves increased in each of five states
with the greatest reserves: Texas, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Colorado. Reserve additions in Texas and
Oklahoma came mostly from extensions
in shale natural gas plays, but in Wyoming
and Colorado, EIA says, positive net revisions to large conventional gas fields
along with increased prices added more
gas reserves than extensions.
On the oil side, the report says U.S.
proved reserves of crude oil and lease
condensate exceeded 36 billion barrels
for the first time since 1975. Collectively,
North Dakota and Texas accounted for
90 percent of the overall net increase in
domestic proved oil reserves, EIA says.
North Dakota added almost 2 billion
barrels in proved oil reserves and surpassed
the federal Gulf of Mexico for the first
time. EIA credits development in the
Bakken and Three Forks formation in
the Willison Basin for the sharp jump.
Texas, which still is the state with the
largest proved oil reserves, had the second-largest production increase, the agency
says. Production from the Eagle Ford
Shale play and tight formations in the
Permian Basin contributed to the 903.0
million-barrel increase in 2013. Crude oil
and lease condensate production also
climbed, with the agency reporting a 15
percent jump to 7.4 MMbbl/d nationwide.
While U.S. oil reserves and production

increased in 2013, EIA says crude oil
imports declined by nearly 10 percent.
Similarly, domestic natural gas imports
declined by 8 percent.
Natural Gas Reserves
EIA reports total domestic natural gas
discoveries of 53.0 Tcf in 2013, of which
96 percent were extensions to existing
fields. New field and new reservoir discoveries in previously discovered fields
contributed 300.0 MMcf and 1.7 Tcf, respectively. Total discoveries of gas reserves
were highest in Pennsylvania (15.8 Tcf),
West Virginia (10.1 Tcf), Texas (9.7 Tcf)
and Oklahoma (4.0 Tcf). The agency
says total discoveries in each of those
states were driven principally by shale
gas development.
Total U.S. natural gas production in
2013 was 26.5 Tcf, an increase of 1.4
percent over 2012, the agency reports.
Marketed natural gas production jumped
25.6 percent, an increase of 1.2 percent
from 2012. EIA points out this is the
eighth consecutive year of production increases. Pennsylvania's 1.1 Tcf of additional production boosted the state's output
by 47.0 percent, the nation's largest increase. Louisiana suffered the largest estimated decline in natural gas production
in 2013, dropping 23.0 percent (700
billion cubic feet), EIA says.
Proved reserves of U.S. shale natural
gas increased by 29.7 Tcf in 2013, which
EIA says is 23 percent over 2012. The
share of shale gas relative to total U.S.
natural gas proved reserves increased
from 40 percent in 2012 to 45 percent in
2013, while estimated shale gas production
increased nearly 10 percent year-overyear, from 10.4 Tcf to 11.4 Tcf.
Texas reported the most shale gas proved
reserves at year-end 2013, EIA says, based
on production from the Barnett, Eagle Ford,
and the portion of the Haynesville/Bossier
Shale gas play within its borders.
Six shale plays contained 94 percent
of U.S. shale gas proved reserves at the
end of 2013, the report says: the Marcellus,
Barnett, Eagle Ford, Haynesville/Bossier,
Woodford and Fayetteville. The Marcellus
added the most new shale gas reserves
(22.1 Tcf) through extensions in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while the
Barnett Shale recorded higher proved reserves mostly in response to higher gas
prices, the agency indicates.
The EIA study says U.S. coalbed
methane reserves decreased 9 percent (1.2
Tcf) in 2013. Estimated CBM production
fell 11 percent, from 1.7 Tcf in 2012 to
1.5 Tcf in 2013. According to the agency,

among individual states, Colorado experienced the largest decline in proved CBM
reserves and production, followed by Alabama. New Mexico had the largest increase in CBM reserves, gaining 84.0
Bcf, ahead of Wyoming's 74.0 Bcf jump.
Crude Oil Reserves
As of Dec. 31, 2013, tight oil plays
accounted for 28 percent of all U.S. crude
oil and lease condensate proved reserves,
the EIA says. More than 95 percent of
U.S. tight oil proved reserves in 2013
came from six plays: Bakken/Three Forks,
Eagle Ford, Bone Spring/Wolfcamp, Marcellus, Barnett, and Niobrara. The study
says the Bakken/Three Forks play, which
had been surpassed by the Eagle Ford in
2012, regained its rank as the top U.S.
tight oil play in 2013.
Overall, EIA says, the United States
produced 2.7 billion barrels of crude oil
and lease condensate in 2013, a 14 percent
increase over 2012. Production from the
lower-48 states jumped 16 percent over
the previous year, while Alaska experienced a 3 percent decline.
North Dakota's increase in proved reserves comes from ongoing development
of the Bakken/Three Forks tight oil play.
EIA says more than three-quarters of the
state's 2013 increase came from extensions.
Total discoveries added 5.5 billion
barrels to crude oil and lease condensate
reserves in 2013, the study says. The
largest total discoveries were in Texas
(2.0 billion barrels), North Dakota (1.6
billion barrels), and U.S. territorial waters
(500.0 million barrels).
As operators concentrated exploration
and production efforts on liquids-rich
portions of natural gas plays to take advantage of comparatively higher liquids
prices, EIA says U.S. proved reserves of
lease condensate increased significantly.
The annual crude oil-to-natural gas price
ratio, which averaged 8.0 from 2000 to
2008, was 34.5 in 2012 and 26.6 in 2013.
Proved reserves of U.S. lease condensate increased by 10.0 percent in 2013,
to 3.1 billion barrels, mostly as a result
of extensions, EIA says. Colorado posted
the largest increase at 133.0 MMbbl, followed by Oklahoma at 104.0 MMbbl.
Lease condensate accounted for 8.6 percent
of total domestic proved oil reserves in
2013, the report states.

annual survey of domestic oil and gas
