the probability overlay as well as an
offset of the two major pods of this geobody.
Although not shown, the brown part
of the geobody was extracted to view its
distribution (the yellow was not included
since it is a nonunique neural facies that
also occurs in the Austin Chalk). A major
fault was shown clearly from this extraction. In addition, later studies indicated
that both geobodies comprised their own
unique neuron classes when their geological and petrophysical characteristics
were classified against other wells in the
area.
Resolution Of Faults
Prior to the multi-attribute analysis
work, the client believed that faults were
not well resolved within the Eagle Ford
on the base "amplitude" seismic survey
or on views of a single similarity attribute.
However, subsequent work demonstrated
that faults could be resolved readily by
analyzing multiple attributes simultaneously.
PCA was used initially to reduce an
initial set of 25 geometric attributes to
10: chaotic reflection, dip of maximum
similarity, similarity, smoothed dip of
maximum similarity, smoothed similarity,
curvature in the dip and strike directions,
maximum curvature, mean curvature, and
shape index.
Figure 4A illustrates a result from a
geometric SOM made from these 10 attributes visualized as a "ghost" on the
Top Eagle Ford horizon, which has been
pushed down into the high-resistivity
Eagle Ford Shale objective.
The multiplicity of faults defied expectations. Well 3H's borehole encountered
six faults while drilling, which can be
seen individually in this image, and were
not anticipated using a single similarity
attribute display. The patterns in the
