to reduce drilling time while steering to
correct for azimuth/inclination. The well
reached TD in 43.3 days and the 14,300foot lateral was drilled in 31.4 days while
remaining 100 percent in zone.
Figure 5 shows all five wells on the pad
on a drilling difficulty index calculated
from measured depth, along-hole displacement, tortuosity, TVD and other key performance indicators. The one-mile shorter
and less tortuous study wells ranked lowest
in difficulty. Extended-reach Well 1 rated
highest on the difficulty index, followed
by the second and third extended-reach
wells. In practice, however, Well 3 was
most challenging to drill, and there were
minimal variables in Well 2 compared with
Well 1's higher tortuosity and harder Bakken
B/C contact transitions and the increased
system friction and drag Well 3 caused by
pyrite inclusions and aggressive fault throws.
The key drivers in drilling extendedreach wells should be understood by all
parties involved. The difficulty level is
different for each extended-reach well
depending on limiting factors (rig, well
design, tubulars, system friction, geology
uncertainties, fluid program, directional
technology, etc.). Drilling optimization
tools and engineering modeling allow effective decision making to efficiently drill
wells with high degrees of drilling difficulty. Proper planning and collaboration
are critical to understanding the risks and
overcoming drilling challenges. The
drilling system will continue to benefit
from a model-measure-optimize approach
to drilling challenging wells.

Anadarko Petroleum
Sells Marcellus Assets
HOUSTON-Anadarko Petroleum
Corp. says it has agreed to sell upstream
and midstream Marcellus Shale assets in
north-central Pennsylvania to Alta Marcellus Development LLC, a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Alta Resources Development
LLC, for $1.24 billion.
The sale excludes the midstream assets
owned by Western Gas Partners LP,
Anadarko's master limited partnership,
the company points out.
Anadarko says the divestiture includes
195,000 net acres and producing properties
that were making 470 million cubic feet
a day at the end of third quarter 2016.
"With this transaction, we have announced or closed monetizations well in
excess of $5 billion for 2016, while focusing
Anadarko's U.S. onshore activities primarily
on our world-class, oil-levered assets in
the Delaware and Denver-Julesburg basins,"
remarks Chairman, President and Chief
Executive Officer Al Walker.
