Tubing Anchor Catchers
Available From Mohawk
HOUSTON-Mohawk Energy, a developer of tubular expansion technologies,
has launched ThruPatch custom accessories. The company says it partnered
with Black Sands Completions to develop
custom ThruPatch tubing anchor catchers
(TACs) and ThruPatch extended reach
packers compatible with casing patches
of various diameters.
The patent-pending tools feature a
special slim-hole design to allow passage
through inner diameter restrictions such
as a casing patch, Mohawk reports. Both
the TAC and extended reach packer are
available for 41⁄2-inch, 51⁄2-inch, and 7inch applications. Mohawk says the tools
drift through the expanded ID of the
company's casing patch and set in the
normal casing ID below.
"We are happy to have worked with
Black Sands Completions as our partner
in developing the ThruPatch solutions,"
comments Scott Benzie, Mohawk's cofounder. "These new slim-hole patch accessories will help our customers maintain
well integrity, efficiency and safety."
The accessories have been applied
successfully in the Permian Basin, Eagle
Ford, and Bakken plays, Benzie reports.

New Book Details Ways To Limit Shale's Impacts
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK,
N.C.-To help oil and gas producers, researchers, and policymakers understand
the environmental consequences of shale
development, Elsevier has published
Sustainable Shale Oil and Gas: Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry and Biochemistry Methods.
The 188-page book by Vikram Rao
and Rob Knight describes low-cost energy
as "a tide that lifts all boats of economic
growth," and notes that shale gas has
fueled a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing
and enabled the power sector to switch
from coal to clean-burning natural gas.
However, the book cautions that many in
the public question whether the climate,
air and water impacts associated with unconventional plays exceed their benefits.
Sustainable Shale Oil and Gas says
it addresses these concerns by providing
a clear and accurate look at shale's environmental impacts. The book considers
methane, volatile organic compound and
particulate matter emissions from the

wellhead to beyond the city gate, as
well as the risk of hydrocarbons or oil
field chemicals contaminating groundwater. In the process, the book promises
to present ways to measure and mitigate
environmental impacts.
"Sustainability, importantly, includes
measures to drive down the cost per barrel
produced," the preface states. "Although
the price to play certainly includes environmental compliance, resiliency to severe
drops in the world oil price is required."
With that in mind, the book details
analytical methods that blend chemistry,
geochemistry, and biochemistry to improve recovery economics. These methods include subsurface DNA sequencing,
which the book describes as a new tool
for reservoir characterization that helps
producers optimize hydraulic fracturing
operations by revealing subtle changes
in rock properties.
Sustainable Shale Oil and Gas is available in print or as an e-book. For information, visit www.elsevier.com.

Sustainable Shale Oil and Gas: Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry and Biochemistry Methods promises practical
solutions to shale's environmental impacts. It is written by
Vikram Rao, executive director of the Research Triangle
Energy Institute and a former Halliburton chief technology
officer, and Rob Knight, a biology professor at the University of California San Diego, who pioneered techniques for
using DNA sequencing to characterize reservoirs.
