Smart Water Management
Another Portion Of Industry's
Innovative Undertakings
Increasingly, it seems we hear about a worldwide lack of
freshwater. As global population continues to grow, we are told,
progressively fewer people will have access to adequate drinking
water. In fact, according to a 2019 article in FastCompany, the
United Nations estimates that the number of people who will
struggle to access freshwater will exceed 5 billion by 2050. The
article goes on to say that large corporations account for around
40 percent of global use and that steps should be taken to
reduce the amount of water used for global business.
Because many consider oil and natural gas companies to be
among those large corporations, sometimes our industry is
picked on for its use of water during regular operations. These
criticisms are largely unfounded, since according to the U.S.
Geological Survey, the entire mining sector-including coal,
minerals and gravel, in addition to oil and gas-accounts for less
than 1% of the country's total water use. In fact, with increased
oil and gas production, the United States has increased its proportion of natural gas power generation-which uses significantly
less water than coal, ultimately reducing the use of water to
cool power plants by as much as 36%.
That said, despite their relatively miniscule water use-
especially when compared with other global industries-oil and
gas companies are addressing the water issue head-on and
finding creative ways to use less water, reuse water or even
achieve water-neutral status. One such company is Pioneer
Natural Resources Co., which during the last few years has brokered a deal with the Texas cities of Midland and Odessa to
access some of the city's treated water in exchange for some
much-needed improvements in both cities' water infrastructure.
In this win/win deal, both cities receive important upgrades to
their water treatment and transport, and Pioneer receives first
call on city water. Because Pioneer developed the first central
distribution system of its kind, fewer trucks will have to travel
Midland and Odessa roads, which ultimately means fewer
costly repairs.
In return, Pioneer can receive 100,000 barrels of water a day
from Odessa and soon will receive more from Midland, with a
total scale-up capacity of 500,000 bbl/d of treated water. The
completely unmanned facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, helping Pioneer dramatically reduce its freshwater use
while keeping fracturing crews running on a regular schedule.
Another company that publicly has led the charge on smart
water use is Southwestern Energy Co. The company operates
under a philosophy that recognizes that although clean water is
necessary for operations, it also is a precious natural resource
that warrants protection for natural ecosystems and human
communities. The Southwestern ECH2O program looks at reduction, innovation and conservation, allowing this innovative
company to meet a voluntary goal of becoming freshwater
neutral in 2016. In other words, for every gallon of water
Southwestern uses during operations, the company replenishes
that gallon within the same operating regions through water
quality improvement projects or treatment technologies that

"These criticisms are largely unfounded,

Survey, the entire mining sector-including

and gas-accounts for less than 1% of the

"

return freshwater to the environment.
Southwestern achieves water reduction through review and
optimization of its best practices, reducing freshwater demand
through improved techniques and tools designed to decrease
the total volume of water needed for fracturing operations.
Southwestern works with state and local agencies to create conservation projects that impact local watersheds, while partnering
with other industries to improve water availability through
mutually beneficial projects. Additionally, the company protects
water resources by minimizing natural resource impacts in the
areas where it works. Finally, Southwestern pursues innovative
technologies that provide new means for water treatment while
taking a leading role in utilizing emerging drilling and completion
technologies directed at reducing water use.
These are only two examples of companies addressing water
challenges and looking at new technologies that aim to reduce
our industry's freshwater use. In 2014, the Energy Water
Initiative brought together leading oil and gas companies to
study, describe and improve life cycle water use and management
in upstream unconventional oil and natural gas exploration and
production. The group included Anadarko Petroleum Corp., BP
America, Chesapeake Energy Corp. and Devon Energy Corp.,
in addition to Pioneer and Southwestern, and companies participated in published case studies that highlighted different exploration and production-phase water management practices in
a variety of U.S. regions.
Water will continue to be a global issue for all industries.
True to form, the oil industry already is developing economic
ways to move forward with operations while ensuring an
adequate water supply for the future. In the coming years, I am
excited to see what's next in our industry as we continue to
refine, develop and share technology.
