Of course, Stockner points out, the
guide retains its educational components
with sections on Virginia natural gas and
the industry's economic impact on the
state, a history of natural gas in Virginia
and the life cycle of a gas well, information
on hydraulic fracturing and an overview
of industry regulation by the DMME's
Division of Gas & Oil.
The guide is hand delivered to every

legislative office in Richmond, which
Landon says has the added benefit of
providing a little "face time" with lawmakers VOGA might otherwise not have
an opportunity to visit. "Virginia's production comes out of only seven counties,"
he reiterates. "A large part of Virginia
doesn't even realize there is a gas industry.
I have had conversations with some legislators whom I didn't know and who
weren't aware what goes on out there.
So I think it does help."
Hanging Around
The second day of VOGA's convention
is dedicated to recreational activities, including a golf tournament at Virginia
Beach National Golf Club and a private
fishing charter.
The technical sessions on Friday, June
21, open with an update on 2018 oil and
gas development by DGO Director Rick
Cooper.
Landon acknowledges that the Virginia
industry continues to endure tough times.
"There isn't a lot of activity in Southwest
Virginia, and that translates into southern
West Virginia and eastern Kentucky as
well," he states.
Gas prices remain low and Virginia
producers must compete for capital with
the Marcellus and Utica shale plays,
but can't match their well volumes,
Landon reasons.
And, he observes, low activity levels
are impacting the service industry. "Those
are drying up," he worries. "So, when
prices do improve, we are going to have
to rebuild the industry in this area."
But the Virginia oil and gas industry
is a long way from finished, Landon vows.
"There is a lot of traditional production
left in Virginia," he affirms. "There are a
lot of wells to be drilled. We just have to
get prices to cooperate a little."
Other VOGA technical session topics
range from U.S. Department of Energy-funded unconventional gas projects
in Central Appalachia to the evolving
role of U.S. gas in global markets, advocating for energy infrastructure and
a look ahead to Virginia's 2019 general
assembly elections.
Landon says VOGA will be watching
those carefully. Prior to the state's 2017
elections, he says, both the state House
of Delegates and Senate were solidly Republican, but Democrats made large gains
last election, especially in the House.
"Now it is the slimmest of margins in
both," he rues.
