Fenton also highlighted a Canadian
company, Carbon Engineering Ltd., which
he said had received investments from the
venture capital arms of Chevron Corp. and
Occidental Petroleum Co., as well as from
Microsoft founder Bill Gates, to capture
carbon from the air. He contrasted such
efforts with those of activists who insist
oil and gas should be left in the ground.
"We don't just burn hydrocarbons, we
use hydrocarbons," he observed. "Let's
say I wave a magic wand and make all
transportation go away. If you still want
iPhones, computers and a lot of other stuff,
the user still has to come to the producer."
Efforts to ban oil and gas production
amount to trying to ban elements of the
universe, specifically numbers one and
six on the periodic table, Fenton declared.
"Humanity's discovery of how to manipulate electron orbital shells and the science
and chemistry of hydrocarbons is . . .
like discovering fire. It is a natural science
of the universe, and once you discover
fire, you don't unlearn fire," he said.

role, Fenton stressed. "The electric vehicle
itself is made of hydrocarbons," he pointed
out. "This is where the butadiene rubber
literally hits the asphalt road. What is the
chassis made of? Thermoplastics. How
does it all come together? Synthetic adhesives. Is the seatbelt made of leather? The
whole thing is made of hydrocarbons."
Many of the contradictions hidden in
the Paris Climate Accord are coming
home to roost, he asserted, citing examples
such as Australia's decision to pull out
of the accord's Green Climate Fund and

other infighting associated with that initiative. He suggested that making climate
change a focus of the next election may
help clarify the situation.
"One of the greatest things that can
happen for human civilization is for
people running for president to say absurd
stuff, because the attention and spoils
are so great," he argued. "If Trump gets
reelected, it will be in no small part
because (fossil fuel opponents) are about
to lose their credibility."
