Larger consulting firms may be able to
provide several consultants who specialize
in different areas. But even with such
expert assistance, developing a safety culture
requires work and patience. For companies
to experience safety's long-term benefits,
they must view safety not as a cop looking
to catch employees doing something wrong,
but as a business partner that works with
other functions to help the company make
the best decisions possible.
In the long run, giving safety a seat at
the table is a wise business decision. It
will increase morale and productivity,
lower insurance premiums, and most importantly, minimize the chance of injuries
that can limit employees' ability to live
their lives to the fullest.
Even so, it can be hard to put safety
on even footing with other priorities. It
always is difficult to spend money on
preventative measures, so we recommend
thinking of safety investments as paying
for control over the future. Once an accident occurs, the direct financial impact
and the indirect costs associated with reduced morale, lost productivity and a

sketchy reputation can be hard to predict
or manage. But if companies take safety
seriously, they will have more consistent

costs, steady productivity and the positive
reputation that comes from embodying
the values to which we all aspire.
