Permian Basin's Delaware Mountain
Group have become more productive
over time, the U.S. Energy Information
Administration says. The number of
producing wells grew from 436 in
January 2005 to 4,338 wells in mid-2019,
the agency says, with average initial oil
production for the first six months of
operations jumping from 67 barrels a day
in 2005 to 770 bbl/d in 2019.
EIA adds that in that same period,
average natural gas production per well
for the first six months went from 100
Mcf a day to 1.6 million cubic feet a day.
The Bone Spring Formation consists
of interbedded siliciclastic, carbonate
and shale rocks as thick as 4,000 feet,
the agency indicates, and is divided into
three intervals. Each interval has low
permeability, but advances in
completion techniques have increased
oil recovery factors to as much as 34%,
EIA says.
In August, average monthly production
from Bone Spring wells reached 600,000
barrels of crude oil and 1.7 billion cubic
feet of natural gas a day. ❒

Gas Storage Levels
Decrease By 446 Bcf

natural gas storage in the United States
stood at 2.747 trillion cubic feet on Jan.
24, 7.6% above the five-year average,
according to the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. That was
down 446 billion cubic feet from the
3.193 Tcf in storage on Dec. 27, which
was 1.2% below the five-year average.
The Jan. 24 storage number was 526
Bcf more than a year ago, when gas
storage stood at 2.221 Tcf.
According to EIA, gas storage in the
East Region was 638 Bcf on Jan. 24,
9.4% above the five-year average, but
133 Bcf less than on Dec. 27, when
storage stood at 771 Bcf, which was
1.7% above the five-year average. East
Region gas storage on Jan. 24 was 105
Bcf more than it was a year ago.
Gas storage in the Midwest Region
stood at 761 Bcf on Jan. 24, 10.8%
above the five-year average and 144 Bcf
less than the 905 Bcf in storage on Dec.

27, which was 0.1% above the five-year
average. Jan. 24 gas storage in the
Midwest Region was 145 Bcf more than
a year ago.
In the Mountain Region, EIA says,
gas storage was 143 Bcf on Jan. 24, 0.7%
below the five-year average and 30 Bcf
less than the 173 Bcf stored on Dec. 27,
which was 3.9% below the five-year
average. Gas storage in the Mountain
Region was 28 Bcf more than a year ago.
Gas storage in the Pacific Region
was 210 Bcf on Jan. 24, 10.6% below
the five-year average and 41 Bcf less
than the 251 Bcf stored on Dec. 27,
which was 12.5% below the five-year
average. Pacific Region gas storage on
Jan. 24 was up 31 Bcf from a year ago.
In the South-Central Region, gas
storage levels on Jan. 24 were 995 Bcf,
10.1% above the five-year average and
down 98 Bcf from the 1.093 Tcf in
storage on Dec. 27, which was 0.7%
below the five-year average. The Jan. 24
gas storage level for the South-Central
Region was up 217 Bcf from a year ago.
