its investment puts the country a step
closer to demonstrating and commercializing
the technology.
DOE says the 12 projects were selected
by its Office of Fossil Energy and
Carbon Management and fit under three
areas of interest:
· Carbon capture research and development;
·
Engineering-scale testing of carbon
capture technologies; and
· Engineering design studies for
carbon capture systems.
DOE indicates its National Energy
Technology Laboratory will manage the
selected projects. One example is the
$4.0 million awarded to Wood Environmental
& Infrastructure Solutions, which
will complete an engineering design
study for CO2 capture at the commercially-operated
Shell Chemicals Complex in
Deer Park, Tx. According to DOE, the
facility aims to reduce its CO2 emissions
by 95% using a post-combustion technology
to capture CO2 from several
plants, including an on-site natural gas
combined heat and power plant.
Calpine Texas CCUS Holdings LLC
in Houston also was awarded a grant for
a Deer Park project. DOE says it has
awarded $4.8 million to Calpine to conduct
an engineering design study on a
commercial-scale, second-generation
carbon capture system to capture 95%
of total CO2 emissions from its Deer
Park natural gas combined cycle
(NGCC) co-generation facility, and apply
a technology previously tested at
commercial scale for CO2 capture from
coal flue gas streams.
Other natural gas CO2 capture projects
DOE says it is backing include
those by:
· General Electric Co., which will
receive $1.5 million to develop a design
in Niskayuna, NY, to capture 95% of
CO2 from NGCC flue gas and potentially
reduce electricity costs by at least 15%;
· CORMETECH Inc., which is being
awarded $2.5 million to refine, optimize
and test a new, lower cost technology
for capturing CO2 from NGCC
plant flue gas in Charlotte, N.C., with
the goal of enhancing the technology's
scalability to large NGCC plants;
· TDA Research Inc., which will
receive $2.5 million to build and test a
post-combustion capture process in
Wheat Ridge, Co., using simulated
NGCC flue gas;.
· The University of Kentucky Research
Foundation in Lexington, Ky.,
which has been awarded $2.5 million to

The investments also include a $5.8
million award to ION Clean Energy,
which will perform an engineering design
study for a carbon capture system
that will be retrofitted onto the existing
Calpine Delta Energy Center in Pittsburg,
Ca., to capture 95% of the CO2
emissions for geologic storage in the
nearby Sacramento Basin. ❒
