Later that afternoon, Dawn Monroe,
Microsoft Office specialist master at Dawn
Monroe Training, will speak on how to
handle data dilemmas in Excel, followed
by IPRB Executive Director Seth Whitehead,
with a presentation titled, " Environmental,
Social and Governance-What
Does it Mean to the Small Independent? "
The trend toward ESG emphasis and
its full impact on smaller independents
remains be seen, Stewart assesses. Whitehead
concurs, citing examples to demonstrate
that the ESG emphasis is not limited
to large, public companies. He recounts
one instance in which a smaller operator
seeking insurance heard about the topic
from a prospective provider.
" This operator said he was having
trouble getting the insurance coverage he
needed because the word 'oil' was in his
company's name and that influenced his
ESG rating, " Whitehead reveals. " It surprised
me because I thought a smaller operator
wouldn't have to worry about it, unlike
big publicly traded companies that are
pressured to put together ESG programs. "
The bottom line for smaller operators
is to be prepared and initiate the process
of having similar programs to prepare
for a future when the programs may be
compulsory, Whitehead adds.
Later, Stewart and IOGA member
Dale Helpingstein and Buzz Daniel will
review the history of the association's
Wildcatter Award and announce the all
time top 10, which has been selected by
a committee of members. The Wildcatter
Award has been bestowed on members
since 1972, Stewart observes.
" We hope its fun and interesting, " he
says. " It's fascinating and will help keep
that interest and enthusiasm for members
going out to drill wells and look for new
sources of oil. We don't have the shale in
this basin that drives activity in other
parts of the country, but we do have a
kind of a vertical resource play in the
lower Mississippian. For us to be a vibrant
and active basin, we need drilling exploration
to continue. "
To close out the afternoon presentations,
Hannes E. Leetaru, head of the oil and
gas section of the Illinois State Geological
Survey, will speak on " What you need to
know about Subsurface Energy Storage, "
including a look at carbon sequestration,
Stewart says.
Events for the rest of the day include
a cocktail reception followed by the
Recognition and Awards Banquet, which
is set for 6-9 p.m. Past presidents, as
well as other honorees, will be recognized
and a new Wildcatter Award winner announced,
Stewart says.
The convention's final day, Friday,
March 4, sees registration and the exhibit
hall open at 7:30 a.m., followed by an
IPRB meeting at 8 a.m. and a vendor
giveaway drawing at 8:30 a.m.
The morning's speakers include Dayanara
Bentancourt, Reservoir Engineering
Adviser at TACHYUS, who is scheduled
to present " Tachyus: Machine Learning/Artificial
Intelligence for Reservoir Evaluation
and Optimization. "
" As a petroleum and reservoir engineer,
I think what they are doing with
this technology makes it more affordable
for smaller companies to have simulation
prediction methods that only bigger
companies could afford previously, "
Stewart considers.
Jeff Hoy, Jerry Robinson and Jim Brooker
will speak on " Then and Now-The
Past 75 Years of Well Logging, Hydraulic
Fracturing and Waterflooding in the Illinois
Basin. " Then the convention will conclude
with a legal and legislative session conducted
by attorneys Matthew McArthy
and Jarred Tynes, Stewart says.
