Makes Fall Season
Prime Time In Industry
Fall is a busy time. As leaves turn and baseball's postseason
begins, companies plan for the coming year. Everyone is setting
budgets, gathering data for annual reports and trying to close
those fourth-quarter deals before the holiday season.
Of course, autumn also packs everyone's schedule with the
largest selection of a typical year's oil field technical and social
events. As we all prepare for next year, many of us juggle dayto-day
duties with events hosted by trade associations, training
groups, fundraisers and even podcasters.
This year has been particularly unique, as the industry returns
to showcasing products and technology after a gradual re-emergence
from the pandemic. Although there has been discussion
about larger events' advantages over smaller, more targeted
gatherings, opportunities abound to network, learn and catch up
with industry friends at events of all types.
Each year, I try to participate in a training or two. For some,
this is a critical period, as yearly re-certification continuing education
credits for annual renewal of technical certifications
begin to come due. This year, the folks at the University of
Kansas Tertiary Oil Recovery Program tackled the timely topic
of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage in the oil field.
The one-day online event had more than 16 experts discussing
CCUS and its ramifications. Global population and improved
living standards both project to grow continually in the coming
decades, while hydrocarbon demand is expected to increase
proportionally, which suggests capturing carbon dioxide at the
source will be necessary. However, controversy surrounds the
question of how best to utilize the captured CO2 if we use the
proper control volume and consider all impacting factors when
calculating " net zero. "
A lineup of speakers that included regulators, academics,
service company representatives and operators highlighted innovative
approaches for CCS/CCUS. Additionally, the group
reviewed some case studies, workflows and monitoring techniques
to achieve some governments' goals; examined economic aspects
of a CCS versus CCUS project implementation; and learned
about the practical aspects of obtaining a Class VI permit, and
how to accelerate this process.
The event was a great success for KU TORP, which has been
working to re-establish its practice of providing technology
transfer events in the North Mid-Continent under the leadership
of Reza Barati.
For me, fall isn't fall in the oil field without the Society of
Petroleum Engineers Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition,
which was held Oct. 3-5 at the George R Brown Convention
Center in Houston. The annual event is billed as the leading
technical energy conference and exhibition for global exploration,
drilling and production professionals and seeks to foster
discussions around innovation in energy and the technology developments
building the upstream industry's road to sustainable
solutions and growth.
This year's event did not disappoint. Amid the many technical
papers, equipment demonstrations and technical talks, the 2022

ATCE looked and felt like the old ATCE events of years' past,
chock-full of industry participation, special hospitality events,
and in one case, a world premiere.
For the last 18 years, Viewpoint, hosted by actor Dennis
Quaid, has made short, meaningful documentaries designed to
inspire audiences to take action. Recently, SUN Specialty
Products was selected to be featured on Viewpoint to highlight
the importance of improving oil and gas reservoir performance,
specifically with novel hydraulic fracturing technology, and its
contribution to fulfilling global energy needs.
The premiere, held on the trade show floor of ATCE, was
part of a technical segment led by industry expert Harold
Brannon from SUN and Don Anschutz from PropTester.
" We are really excited to be a part of such an important program, "
said SUN President Doug Heller. " We are passionate
about educating the public about the oil and gas industry's contribution
to global energy security, and the Viewpoint format is
a great way to share our message. "
The 2023 ATCE returns to San Antonio. I anticipate even
more participation, as companies expand their reaches and
grow product offerings as the industry moves into the next
chapter of growth in the world of environmental, social and
governance considerations.
Finally, the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board hosted the
25th Annual Oil & Natural Gas EXPO, Oct. 13 at the Oklahoma
City Fairgrounds. According to event organizers, this year's
event was the biggest yet, as the group celebrated a quarter
century as the state's largest industry event, exclusively featuring
the innovations, technologies and economic contributions of oil
and natural gas in Oklahoma.
These are only a few of the events that have kept my autumn
calendar full. I look forward to seeing the continued growth of
technical and social events such as these as the year winds down,
and I am excited to see what is in store for 2023 and beyond. ❒
