Of Industry Events
Happy New Year! I am always amazed at how quickly the
years pass. It is hard to believe this is my tenth year writing this
column. I am still humbled to be part of such a well-respected
and established publication. I hope everyone had a wonderful
holiday. Last month, it was fantastic to see the robust turnout
for the 2022 Annual Suppliers and Oilfield Industry Appreciation
Event in Wichita, Ks. This event and others like it are a great reminder
of how strong this industry remains.
A great way to start the new year is to start marking your
calendars for a few exciting events in the months ahead. It is
vital to highlight opportunities for readers to stay current,
maintain a competitive edge, and discover innovations and best
practices to enhance their operations.
My first event of 2023 is the Society of Petroleum Engineers'
Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference (SPE-HFTC),
scheduled for Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at The Woodlands Waterway
Marriott Hotel in The Woodlands, Tx. This year will be my
12th SPE-HFTC, and it never fails to deliver an outstanding
showcase of fracturing technology and innovations. The event
brings thousands of SPE members from around the globe to
hear more than 50 papers and explore one of the industry's
most popular exhibitions.
According to SPE, the event focuses on current and proven
technologies in hydraulic fracturing, lessons learned from
fractured wells, and how to apply this technology globally. This
year, SPE-HFTC honors John Lee and Mohamed Y. Soliman as
the 2023 SPE Legends of Hydraulic Fracturing Award recipients.
Lee is a professor at Texas A&M University, where he holds the
DVG Endowed Chair in Petroleum Engineering. Soliman is the
chairman of the petroleum engineering department at the
University of Houston. These two gentlemen have nearly 100
years of combined experience with numerous publications,
patents and awards throughout their esteemed careers. You definitely
want to make this event; however, if you decide to attend,
book your room fast, because space is limited and the convention
hotel fills quickly.
Feb. 1-3 will draw me to the 30th Anniversary NAPE Summit
Week at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
NAPE continues to be the energy industry's premier marketplace
for buying, selling and trading prospects and producing properties.
NAPE is a great annual event and is the only show where
attendees make deals right on the tradeshow floor. Every
landman and anyone involved in any part of the exploration
process should strive to be at this event.
NAPE brings together all industry disciplines, draws in decision-makers,
focuses its participation on prospect generators
and hosts companies of all sizes, from small independents to
majors. With the addition of bitcoin mining and renewable
energy sources to our oil and gas offerings, NAPE is the
ultimate venue for energy deals. If you have never been to

The SPE Reservoir Simulation Conference is scheduled for
March 28-30 at the Galveston Island Convention Center. This

conference continues to provide engineers and scientists the
chance to see leading-edge technologies and discuss applications
in reservoir simulation. In addition, attendees will hear discussions
on the critical drivers in reservoir simulation and learn about
technological advances to improve efficiency and profitability.
This is a top-ranked event for anyone working with simulation
tools and techniques.
April 3-5, the American Association of Drilling Engineers is
hosting the 2023 National Technical Conference and Exhibition
at the Bush Convention Center in Midland. This conference
covers topics including case histories, improvements and innovations
in drilling. It is a must-attend event for independent operators,
service companies, drilling contractors, suppliers, manufacturers
and distributors.
In June, you do not want to miss the Unconventional
Resources Technology Conference, scheduled for June 13-15 at
its birthplace in Denver. A collaboration of SPE, the American
Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Society of
Exploration Geophysicists, this event focuses on the latest
science and technology innovations applied to exploring and
developing unconventional resources, with a particular emphasis
on integrating technical/professional disciplines.
These are only a few of the events I have planned for 2023 in
the first half of the year alone! In addition, I encourage everyone
to attend multiple technical conferences to build their networks,
make deals and enhance their operational knowledge. You may
even discover an innovation or resource that helps take your operation
from good to great. I am as excited as ever to work in
the oil and gas industry and eager to continue learning and
sharing my perspective on emerging technology for the next
decade or more.
