Polls: Americans Still Want Oil, Gas
WASHINGTON-Results from a
couple of recent surveys confirm that a
majority of Americans continue to reject
governmental efforts to push oil and
natural gas out of the country's energy
portfolio. Also consistent with previous
studies of public opinion are the polls'
findings that, although most Americans
express support for nontraditional energy
sources and for policies to address
global climate change, they place
greater priority on energy that is inexpensive
and reliable.
One of the surveys-conducted by
free-market oriented organizations The
American Energy Alliance and the Committee
to Unleash Prosperity-is being
touted by the Institute for Energy Research
with a topline finding that U.S.
voters' attitudes about matters of climate,
energy and environmental policy remain
largely unchanged from the survey's previous
inquiries into the subject. Or as IER
headlines the results: " New Survey, Same
Results: Voters Prefer Affordable Energy
Over Climate Agenda. "
Meanwhile, the other survey has
been conducted and published by the
Pew Research Center and appears under
the headline " Majorities of Americans
Prioritize Renewable Energy, Back
Steps to Address Climate Change. "
However, the report's subhead- " But
many foresee problems ahead with transition
to renewables and oppose breaking
from fossil fuels altogether " -points
to some of the findings' particularly pivotal
details that harmonize well with the
other survey results.
Issue Stability
IER turns to Mike McKenna of MWR
Strategies to analyze some salient points
about the poll results from American Energy
Alliance/Committee to Unleash
Prosperity. He highlights the extent to
which political affiliation influences respondents'
stances on energy matters.
" First, and probably most pointedly,
Republicans continue to be on solid
ground with respect to who should make
decisions about (and who should pay for)
car and truck purchases, on carbon dioxide
taxes, on willingness to pay to address
climate change, on issue
prioritization, and even on the fundamentals
of the science (by a margin of 19
points respondents identified carbon
dioxide as 'needed for plant life' rather
than a 'pollutant'), " McKenna relates.
" Second, voter sentiment and attitudes
on energy and climate change seem to be
characterized by stasis; despite what you
may have read in the media, there has
been little change in voter sentiments and
attitudes with respect to energy and climate
change, " he adds. " Many of the responses
in the survey are either consistent
with or more emphatic than what we have
found previously. "
That is because the extent to which
opinions have changed from past surveys
tend to show declining approval of governmental
mandates, taxation and bans

on gasoline-powered products, McKenna
says, while voters also demonstrate progressively
less favorable attitudes about
relying on China for important aspects of
the energy value chain.
In one such example, 81% of respondents
predicted federal electric vehicle
mandates would send electricity prices
climbing, while 74% of respondents said
that in 2022, and 69% did so in 2021. In
another instance, 64% of participants
said they were very concerned about
China's domination of the electric vehicle
supply chain, while that same response
garnered 56% agreement in 2022
and 43% in 2021.
In another example, the 2023 survey
finds that voters disapprove of a tax on
carbon dioxide by a 44-point margin, 6521.
In 2022, opponents opposed it 63-23,
and in 2021 it was opposed 62-38.
On the question of whether the federal
government should raise energy
taxes as a potential response to climate
change, 2023 respondents opposed such
measures by a 63-point margin, with
77% rejecting that approach and 14%
embracing it. In 2022, the margin was 55
points (70-15); in 2022 opponents held a
38-point edge (59-21).
The question of whether the government
should ban gasoline-powered vehicles
was opposed in this year's survey by
a margin of 67 points (82-15). In 2022, it
was opposed by a margin of 63 points
(76-13), and in 2021 it was opposed by a
margin of 66 points (75-9).
Findings from the joint American Energy Alliance/Committee to Unleash Prosperity survey demonstrate that U.S. voters are exceedingly
skeptical of efforts to force an " energy transition " on the public if the associated policies force consumers to pay higher energy prices.
