Turbo To Help Atlas With Sand Conveyor Belt
AUSTIN, TX.-Atlas Energy Solutions
has selected Voith Turbo to supply 21
TurboBelt 800 TPXL fill control fluid
coupling drives (including spares) to
power 42 miles of conveyor belt as part
of the historic Dune Express project,
Voith reports. The company adds that
ELIN Motoren, a Voith subsidiary, will
provide 21 customized, low-noise electric
motors for the project, including spares.
The conveyor belt will transport sand
from Atlas' facility in Kermit, Tx., into
New Mexico for storage or delivery. By
powering the extensive conveyor system,
Voith says its TurboBelt 800 TPXL coupling
drives will allow Atlas to eliminate

CHICAGO-DCC Propane announces
it has acquired San Isabel Services
Propane, a company that formed in 2002
and offers propane services throughout
southern Colorado.

traffic and emissions.
Voith says the Dune Express will be
the longest conveyor belt in North and
South America and the second-longest
in the world. It also will set a world
record for the longest single conveyor
flight without a mid-belt drive, at an
overall single flight length of 16.3 miles.
To support the project, Voith relates it
developed seven drive package designs.
Most significantly, the Voith drives needed
to provide a specified acceleration time
of 10 minutes for the conveyors, significantly
longer than most large conveyors,
which typically require 60-120 seconds.
Voith explains that the extended startup
time was required to maintain belt tensions,
especially along the lengthy horizontal
curves for two of the system's four belts.
Commissioning and installation of the
full conveyor system is scheduled to
occur in the fourth quarter of next year,
Voith says, adding that the complete Dune
Express will have more than 75,000 tons
of sand storage space.
