Permian Basin Reports

Pioneer Natural Resources is in
full development mode in the
Wolfcamp A and B zones in its
750,000 Midland Basin acres.
Vice President Bonnie Black says
the company has drilled more
than 1,000 horizontal wells in
the Midland Basin and will drill
250-275 more this year.

centers that operate as an intelligence and
analysis hub.
"We are 'uberizing' the shale field of
the future with our iShale concept," he
characterizes.
Multiple Zone Focus
Black says Pioneer Natural Resources
is in full development mode in the Wolfcamp A and B, but the company is developing long-term strategy for three other
zones as well. "And we have zones that
are not yet in our 10-year plans," she
adds. "The number of prospective zones
in any area varies. We have appraised a
lot, but how many more will depend on
how we mature."
Pioneer is on the verge of becoming a
pure Permian player by year-end, having
announced plans to sell its Raton Basin
leasehold, selected Eagle Ford acreage and
its West Panhandle Field. It also is planning
to divest its remaining core Eagle Ford
position and other South Texas assets.
Black says Pioneer is the largest Midland Basin acreage-holder with 750,000
acres. That includes 550,000 acres in the
northern Midland Basin and 200,000
acres in what it calls its Southern Wolfcamp joint venture.
"We have drilled more than 1,000 hor-

izontal wells in the Midland Basin and
will drill 250-275 more wells this year,"
she stated in August.
About 85 percent of the company's
drilling comes from its Wolfcamp A and
B zones. Black says that will drop to 70
percent during the next 10 years as Pioneer adds more wells in the Spraberry
formation.
She says Pioneer is calling its additional appraisal work the "Stackberry
Appraisal." It has three programs and
19 total wells in which it is testing the
proper sequencing, spacing and completion design to determine the optimum
development strategy for the Middle
Spraberry Shale, Jo-Mill and Lower
Spraberry Shale formations.
Although Black admits that the quantity
of wells Pioneer can drill varies in each
area, she projects the company eventually
will be able to drill as many as-and possibly more than-30 wells in each onesection-by-two-section block. It currently
is drilling laterals that range from 7,500
to 14,000 feet.
Pioneer operated 20 horizontal rigs in
the first half of 2018. It added two in August and will bring on two additional
rigs in the fourth quarter to support the
company's 2019 plan.

Version 3.0+
Black confirms Pioneer has a large
number of completion designs. It started
using its version 3.0 and now is advancing
to what it calls version 3.0+. "We put
38 version 3.0 wells on production in
the second quarter and 29 version 3.0+,"
she offers. "We have drilled 65 version
3.0+ wells in 2017-18, and they have
outperformed offset wells an average of
30 percent."
Black says Pioneer will add approximately 60 version 3.0+ wells this year.
"We expect them to continue to show
more uplift," she remarks. "But we tailor
and customize each well for each zone,
whether it is version 3.0 or 3.0+. There
are many variations for each version."
Version 3.0+ wells pump 2,500 pounds
or more per foot of sand compared with
2,000 pounds per foot in version 3.0. Pioneer also has tested cluster spacing up
to 15 feet and fracture stage lengths down
to 100 feet.
"We are progressing on our design effort," Black affirms, noting that Pioneer
is trying constantly to find the perfect
formula.
She says an example of how much Pioneer has improved its ability to deliver
increasing production numbers is a threewell Wolfcamp D pad that it brought on
line this year utilizing version 3.0 in its
Southern Wolfcamp joint venture. The pad
delivered 90-day cumulative production
of 373,000 barrels of oil equivalent (60
percent oil). That represents a 75 percent
increase over a similar three-well Wolfcamp
D pad it drilled and completed in the same
area in 2014-15, according to Black.
"We learn something new every day,"
she considers.
Pioneer delivers approximately 165,000
barrels of oil a day (more than 90 percent
of its total Permian production) to the
Gulf Coast under firm transportation contracts. According to Black, 103,000 bbl/d
were exported during the second quarter,
which exposed the company to higher
Brent pricing. The firm transportation
uplift associated with Gulf Coast refinery
and export sales added $69 million in incremental cash flow, according to the company's second-quarter earnings report.
The majority of the company's Permian
gas production is under firm contracts
