that averaged 30- and 60-day peak rates
of 1,294 boe/d (86 percent oil) and 1,137
boe/d (86 percent oil), respectively, from
an average lateral length of 9,800 feet.
She says the Vanessa and Karen project
highlights Concho's success optimizing
lateral placement and completion design
to improve economics and performance.
The project includes six wells. The average 30- and 60-day peak rates for those
wells were 1,250 boe/d (87 percent oil)
and 1,076 boe/d (86 percent oil), respectively, from an average lateral length of
10,261 feet.
Concho's second-quarter report credits
right-sizing key completion design variables,
including stage spacing and fluid volumes,
with driving the outstanding results, and
says it expects to capture well-cost savings
as a result of the design changes.
Concho also has one rig running in
the New Mexico Shelf, drilling four wells
there in the second quarter.
New San Andres Life
The San Andres formation has produced an estimated 12 billion barrels of
oil from vertical wells, but the historical
Permian zone is gaining new life as a
horizontal play.
A number of companies, including
Denver-based Elk Meadows Resources,
have targeted the San Andres zone on
the Central Basin Platform.
"We started looking at the Permian in
2013 because we thought it was a good
area to get funding," recalls President and
Chief Executive Officer Terry Dobkins.
"We identified a prospect along the Andrews-Gaines county border in West Texas.

We looked at a number of other prospects
on the Central Basin Platform and the
Northwest Shelf, but we came back to
the first prospect we identified."
Elk Meadows acquired 11,000 acres
in what it calls the Dempsey Creek Project.
"It fit with what we do," Dobkins states.
"Other companies were starting to drill
laterals in the San Andres with multiple
frac stages. We had done that in the Barnett. We studied what Forge Energy was
doing in the nearby Shafter Lake Field.
We ran the decline curve and thought
our Dempsey Creek acreage looked a lot
like Shafter Lake.
"The key was geology," he emphasizes.
"We were looking for structures that had
a low-permeability, oil-saturated downdip
side. We believed uneconomical vertical
wells on a downdip, oil-saturated flank
were a good indication that the reservoir
was a good horizontal lateral candidate."
This concept turned out to be successful,
Dobkins confirms. Elk Meadows began
its Dempsey Creek development program
by drilling and completing the JD Biles 2
1H well in December 2014. That initial
well exceeded the company's expectations,
he praises. The JD Biles was completed
with a 4,500-foot lateral and peaked in
the first month at 500 bbl/d. Dobkins says
it flattened nicely, and the company lists
the well's estimated ultimate recovery in
the 450,000 barrel range.
Elk Meadows since has drilled 13 producing wells and two saltwater disposal
wells in the project and plans to drill at
least one, and possibly two more wells,
this year. Dobkins claims its leasehold
will be able to support six wells a section.
