Earlier this year, High Roller Sand opened a mine north of Kermit with the capacity to
produce 4 million tons/year. In September, the company announced that construction
had begun on its new Penwell plant near Monahans. The plant is projected to be
operating at full capacity by year's end and will produce 1 million tons/year of 100mesh sand. High Roller has entered into a partnership with TSS LLC to handle transportation and storage logistics from the mine to the well site.

we deliver with each load, will help soften
those logistical issues as Permian demand
continues to rise."
High-Quality Sand
In January 2018, backed by private
investors, High Roller Sand opened a
state-of-the-art, hydraulic fracturing sand
facility eight miles north of Kermit off
FM 1218 that is capable of supplying the
northern Delaware and northern Midland
basins, but the plant is especially suited
to assist operators in the northern
Delaware, states Executive Vice President
Dave Frattaroli.
In early September, the company announced that construction had begun on
two new facilities: the Penwell plant near
Monahans that is projected to be operating
at full capacity by year's end and will
produce 1 million tons/year of 100-mesh
frac sand, and the 115 plant north of
Kermit off route 115 to produce 4 million
tons/year of a 40/70- and 100-mesh mix.
"Current production at the Kermit 1218
plant is approximately 60 percent 100mesh and 40 percent 40/70. It is the best
100-mesh supply in the United States, with
the exception of some of the sand deposits
in Oklahoma. There has never been a concern about the quality of the 100-mesh
sand produced in West Texas. The 40/70
mesh from Wisconsin and Minnesota has
a higher crush resistance but the distance
and cost to obtain that sand is significantly
greater," Frattaroli emphasizes.
Despite the spate of new sand ventures
and ongoing expansions in the basin,
Frattaroli says he expects an acceleration
in mergers and acquisitions among Permian sand vendors.

"Plants are capable of making more
sand than the Permian can likely consume.
The sand plants with good logistics and
solid partnerships with oil and gas operators and service companies are the ones
that are going to thrive," concludes Frattaroli.
Ramping Up Capacity
Fort Worth-based Vista Proppants and
Logistics currently operates three sand
mines in Texas and has plans to expand
capacity in its Kermit facility from 3
million to 5 million tons/year of frac
sand, reports Vista's Chief Financial Officer Kristin Smith.
"We anticipate that this expansion will
be completed by the fourth quarter of

2018." she says.
In addition to existing Permian facilities
and expansion plans, Vista also supplies
operators from a 4.5 million tons/year plant
at its Cresson facility and from a 1 million
ton/year plant at nearby Tolar. Smith says
each of the three mines supplies a range of
40/70-, 100- and 200-mesh. The company's
in-basin Permian deposit consists primarily
100-mesh and 40/70-mesh sands.
"We designed the Kermit plant to be
flexible with its sand production," Smith
explains. "This flexibility allows Vista to
shift its production mix to respond to
customer needs."
The current expansion plans in the Permian and the focus on the ultimate customer
need is part of a natural progression for
the team at Vista, according to Smith.
Driven by customer feedback, Vista started
as a trucking company in 2004, followed
closely by adding transload facilities
throughout Texas and Oklahoma, and continued its vertical integration with the acquisition of its first mine in 2011, she says.
With customers principally concerned
about security of supply, Vista has expanded its transload terminal footprint
and in-basin mining strategy with an eye
on having sand supplies within trucking
distance from the wellsite, Smith explains.
The transload system also helps ensure
supply availability by reducing dependence
on truck drivers in the event of a shortage,
she adds.
"Ultimately, we are a mine-to-wellhead
company," Smith remarks. "Our team
can get sand out of the ground directly to
the well site, and we believe that our
competency in trucking, logistics and
owning/operating the entire supply chain
is something our customers value." r

Vista Proppants and Logistics is expanding the capacity of its mining facility at Kermit
from 3 million to 5 million tons/year assuming receipt of applicable permits, with expansion scheduled to be completed in late 2018 or early 2019. The company's frac sand capacity consists of a blend of 100- and 40/70-mesh sands and the plant is designed to be
flexible to allow the production of more 100-mesh sand when customers need it.
