COLLECTED WISDOM

EDITOR'S NOTE:
The following is a compilation of flight instructors' favorite techniques
for teaching a procedure, enhancing a student's aviation experience, and
promoting learning. Email cfinewsletter@aopa.org to share your favorite
instructional tip.
COCKPIT MISMANAGEMENT
Watch students get in the airplane planning on a local flight in the practice
area. They usually put their flight bag with all charts in the back. Now,
request he or she take you to a towered airport. The first thing they ask is,
"What's the frequency?" My response: It's on the chart in the back." This
reminds them to always have a current chart handy.

RISK RULE OF THUMB: NO MORE THAN TWO
Some simple risk management rules that I've applied to my own flying,
I've also passed on to my students. For any flight, I take a list of risk factors
and decide in advance that I will accept no more than two. For example:
singe engine, night, IMC, high terrain, icing probability, unfamiliar
airplane, etc. A combination of any two is Okay. But more than two is a NoGo. The risk isn't worth stretching my skills.
-George Wilts
HOW LOW OR HIGH AM I?
In glider training, try to get students to continually judge altitude and
position relative to the touch down area without use of the cockpit panel.
Make sure they have at least one flight with the altimeter covered.

A NOT SO 'USUAL' UNUSUAL ATTITUDE RECOVERY
During a series of instructional recoveries under the hood (e.g. back
to original heading and altitude), I will do something to change the
configuration of the aircraft (like adding flaps) before handing back the
controls and asking the student to recover. It will force the student to
evaluate the aircraft condition when they have difficulty returning the
airplane to its original heading, altitude, power, and airspeed.
-Ken Brown
A LITTLE CARB HEAT
To simulate the effects of density altitude on takeoff performance, have
the student take off with the carburetor heat On. This obviously means
you need to make sure to have plenty of runway and no obstacles for this
simulation.

HOW NOT TO DO IT! LESSONS LEARNED
In the dark ages (with a full set of hair), I reported to Pensacola to "learn to
fly the T-28." My instructor was well schooled in the "Pensacola Pressure
Cooker" method of training. From Day One, until he was transferred, he
would swear at me at the top of his lungs from the beginning to the ending
of each hop. I was not really sure what the training goals were, but two
things were accomplished: 1) I hated nearly every second of training, and
2) I have never raised my voice at a student.
