CFI-to-CFI Newsletter - Volume 10 Issue 2 - 25

POINT/COUNTERPOINT
THE DEBRIEF INVARIABLY BEGINS AS YOU'RE PUTTING AWAY THE AIRPLANE-BUT
THIS GETS THE DISCUSSION GOING WHILE YOU'RE BOTH PARTIALLY DISTRACTED.
KEEP SPINNING THE WHIZ WHEEL!

E6Bs, to be exact, don't run out of batteries and don't have problems linking
up to the internet. Electrical stuff fails-not maybe, but 100 percent
eventually. Pilots need to have a backup, always.
-Dean Eppler
I keep an E6B in my airplane. I bought it in 1977 when I started flying. I use
it all the time. It never runs out of batteries, is easy to see, and you can use
one hand to manipulate it while holding on to the controls with the other.
Long from dead, all students should learn to use it just as all students should
learn to add, divide, multiply, and subtract by hand before using a calculator.
I think it cuts down on the giga errors because the erroneous outcomes will
be easy to recognize.
-John A Majane III
I was one of those people with a slide rule on his belt. I later got to teach
students who had never seen a slide rule. I found calculator users frequently
have no idea about the approximate magnitude and direction of the answer.
This leads to the acceptance of wrong answers. Consequences of mistakes
in exams are bad grades, and mistakes in flight calculations can be worse.
The E6B, like the slide rule, makes you think and visualize. After learning to
visualize and estimate the answer, students can safely use a calculator or pad.
-Steve Hurst CFII MEI

As a pilot for 47 years, a 36-year flight instructor, a 10-time Master CFI, and
a retired DPE of 25 years (with more than 9,000 flight hours), I feel using
the whiz wheel in the airplane is much better than using the electronic
one. It can be held at eye level and operated using one hand. With slight
head and eye movement one can see outside and work the E6B. To use the
electronic one, it needs to sit on one leg meaning head and eye contact must
be lowered. This can easily cause disorientation and loss of situational
awareness. On a side note: Proper folding of the sectional or TAC should
also be encouraged. This, too, should be held up at eye level and viewed
as the E6B-not down on one's lap. Glass cockpits are great but basic
navigation skills still need to be taught and understood.
-Bob Gawler
As a CFI for nearly 40 years, I agree that initially students should become
familiar with the circular slide rule/E6B, and then progress to the electronic
versions. Additionally, you can use the E6B for a multitude of tasks-scrape
ice off the windshield of your car (not the aircraft), works under water, and
never needs batteries.
-Bob Spencer
