CHIEF'S CORNER
Usually it would only take one flight for them
to improve. He would often say that sometimes
they just needed to hear it differently, from
somebody else, for it to click.
So why all the reminiscing about mentors,
past and current? Because they truly play a
role in our lives as flight instructors and pilots.
Interestingly, I find myself now in that role and
perhaps that is what started me on this thought
journey. Even the FAA acknowledges that
mentoring is important in flight instruction.

pdf. They even have formal mentoring contacts
that you can use if you wish. The Society of
Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) has a
very formal mentoring program available to
their members where they match up mentors
and mentees to provide opportunities to
enhance the professional development of
aviation educators of all types (safepilots.org).
Ultimately, "participants (will) grow stronger
and smarter in promoting a safe aviation
environment." Sounds good to me!

If you participate in a formal or informal
mentoring program, having a mentor or two
is very beneficial. If you don't have a mentor
yet, I would strongly recommend getting one,
it will help you in many ways. I still reach out
to CFIs who have mentored me, maybe not as
often as I once did, but now I'm also reaching
out to newer mentors and colleagues and for
that I thank them!

chief flight instructor and manager of aviation
safety programs. Before joining ASI, John was
AOPA's manager of aviation policy. He earned
his flight instructor certificate in 1996 and enjoys
seeing students light up when they put it all
together and nail a maneuver.

WHAT IT WAS, BUT IT WAS
SOMETHING THAT I COULD SEE
AND UNDERSTAND VERY CLEARLY,
AND MY CLASS COULDN'T.
