FLY SAFE: PREVENT LOSS OF CONTROL ACCIDENTS
The FAA and the general aviation (GA) community's national #FlySafe campaign helps
educate GA pilots on how to avoid a loss of control (LOC) accident-an unintended
departure of an aircraft from controlled flight. LOC can happen when the aircraft enters
a flight regime that is outside its normal flight envelope and quickly develops into a stall
or spin. LOC is the number one root cause of fatalities in GA accidents. More than two
percent of GA fatalities occur during the maneuvering phase of flight. Of those accidents,
half involve stall/spin scenarios. The Fly Safe series explains how you can incorporate

SPACE LAUNCHES AND GENERAL AVIATION
Among aviation groups there is a consensus that airspace safety will take a giant leap
forward if the FAA brings commercial space ventures and traditional aviation together to
address their shared concerns about the airspace system.

FAA TRANSITIONS TO ICAO FLIGHT PLAN FORMAT
The FAA has transitioned to mandatory use of the international flight plan format for all
IFR and VFR domestic and international civil flights, effective August 27. The change
is part of an effort to modernize and streamline flight planning and supports the FAA's
NextGen initiatives. Guidance on how to complete an international flight plan is available
at faa.gov/go/flightservice.
NASA USING 3D PRINTING TO STUDY AIRCRAFT ICING
NASA's 3D printing tool to generate new data will help airplane manufacturers and
operators more efficiently deal with one of aviation's oldest safety challenges-icing.
That data, which will be publicly available in 2020, is the result of a cooperative five-year
research program that involved NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, the French
Aerospace Lab (ONERA), and several U.S. universities. The key to this new set of data,
which offers a better understanding of ice formation and its effects on an airplane, is the
advent of using 3D printing as a research tool.

MORE PILOTS GOING ONLINE FOR WEATHER BRIEFINGS
The number of pilots who call flight service for initial weather briefings continued
trending lower in 2019, with online alternatives and apps picking up the slack, according
to the 2019 AOPA Weather Survey.
