and fuel consumption to an alternate airport
selected by the examiner, as well as the ability to
"utilize flight deck displays of digital weather."

Ground reference maneuver knowledge
includes the applicant demonstrating
"understanding of " the purpose of ground
reference maneuvers, the effects of wind on
ground track, and the effects of bank angle and
groundspeed on rate and radius of the turn.

Knowledge in the section on lost procedures is
simple: Know how to determine your position
and know what assistance is available. Risk
management includes "failure to record
times over waypoints"; and skills that must be
demonstrated include identifying prominent
landmarks and contacting ATC.

THE NAVIGATION SECTION
Navigation is broken into four types: Pilotage and
dead reckoning; navigation systems and radar
services; diversion; and lost procedures.
Knowledge in pilotage includes magnetic
compass errors, plotting of courses, and an
understanding of how to determine heading,
speed, and course. Risk management in nav
systems includes being able to "identify, assess

THE SLOW FLIGHT AND STALLS SECTION
This section also has four sub-sections:
Maneuvering during slow flight; power-off stalls;
power-on stalls; and spin awareness. The spin
section is the only part of the ACS that has no
skill to demonstrate-as spins are not currently
part of most checkrides-but the test still
includes the knowledge and risk management
elements associated with spins.

Slow flight skill is performed just shy of the stall
horn and requires straight-and-level flight, turns,
climbs, and descents in whatever configuration
the examiner specifies. For stalls, the ACS
expects the applicant to "acknowledge" the cues
of an impending stall, then recover "promptly"
after the break.
