CHIEF'S CORNER
Well, turning to the current manuals and
references, I found what I needed to say and
practiced a bit to get it right and knock off the rust,
then proceeded to try it out on my first student.
It seemed a little hesitant and forced at first, but
then it was back into the groove and it felt normal
and good. Knowledge was transferred, skills were
learned, and then here came another student and
another, each with different knowledge levels
and needs to challenge me. Would a booklet
like "Patter" help? Sure, but we have that in a
way. The FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook and
Helicopter Flying Handbook give instructors the
things we need to say and how, but each of us will
put our unique touches on how we do that. It was
something that I found useful when I would have
a student struggling with a maneuver and have
them fly with another instructor to evaluate and
review what might be going on. Several times it
was a matter of the other instructor talking about
it in terms that resonated better with my student.
Other times it was a slight change in how they
performed the maneuver. Whatever it was, my
students benefitted as did I because I would
find out what it was that my colleague did, and I
would adopt that into my toolbox.
The idea that we should have a standardized way
of describing elementary maneuvers is a good
idea, but as instructors and educators we need to
be able to break it down into better manageable
bits for our students when they start having
trouble understanding what we are talking about.
Having a hook to hang their hat on as a former
colleague used to say is always good. Taking
them from the known to the unknown helps our
students learn better. A patter can do that, but
pay attention to ensure they understand and be
ready to try a different take on it if needed.
I'm glad I found that little booklet and I think
about the thousands of pilots who benefitted
from it-including myself-and I'm in awe of
the impact of the words still used today to teach
mere mortals to fly.

A WAY. THE FAA'S AIRPLANE FLYING
HANDBOOK AND HELICOPTER FLYING
HANDBOOK GIVE INSTRUCTORS THE
THINGS WE NEED TO SAY AND HOW,
BUT EACH OF US WILL PUT OUR UNIQUE
TOUCHES ON HOW WE DO THAT.
