EXAMPLE 3
We dropped our pin just north of North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT) in Nevada. What airspace will the
rocket transition through? (Hint: be sure to reference the Special Use Airspace information at the
bottom of the graphic.)
1.	 SURFACE - 4,499' MSL = CLASS D
2.	 4,500' MSL - 4,999' MSL = CLASS E
3.	 5,000' MSL - 10,000' MSL = CLASS B
4.	 10,001' MSL - 17,000' MSL = ALERT AREA (A-481)
5.	 10,001' MSL - 17,999' MSL = CLASS E
6.	 FL180 - FL600 = CLASS A

Here we can expect to transition through airspace no less than six different times! One small detail
that's easy to miss is the minus sign in "-45" for this Class D airspace's height. The minus sign signifies
that North Las Vegas's Class D airspace extends up to, but does not include, 4,500' msl due to the
neighboring shelf of Class B.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO QUIZ STUDENTS (AND
OURSELVES FOR THAT MATTER) ON THE FINER POINTS
OF AIRSPACE. BUT MY FAVORITE METHOD IS TO USE
THE "ROCKET" TECHNIQUE.

It also helps mixing in Special Use Airspace (SUA), such as Alert Areas, as part of our lesson. In this
example, we have an Alert Area (A-481) to consider. An interesting characteristic of Alert Areas is
that they do not extend into Class A, B, C, and D airspace, or Class E airport surface areas, even though
they may be printed over them. So even though A-481 is published for 7,000' msl - 17,000' msl, it only
applies to us starting at 10,001' MSL due to Class B airspace.
Lastly, charted SUA also includes the hours of operation, altitudes, and the controlling agency. If you're
using a paper sectional, you can find this important information along the margin of the chart. If
you're using an electronic flight bag, check with your provider for more details.
