TEACH YOUR STUDENTS WELL

heard of the side country-to me, there was only
the backcountry and everything else. So, what is
it? The side country is that place in between your
typical paved airport and the short, forbidding
fields of the mountains. As Wilke put it, "the side
country is something that is easily accessible, but
it's not necessarily something for your average
low-time pilot." In Wisconsin, these strips are
typically 500 to a couple thousand feet long, and
almost always on private property. Side country
strips are all around us, and for flight instructors,
they offer a unique opportunity to teach our
students practical applications of short and soft
field techniques.
Our students, once certificated, can fly anywhere
in the country, and if you've taught them how
to perform a maneuver solely in order to pass a
checkride, you've done them a great disservice.
We want our students to feel confident in multiple
operating environments-not just in the local
vicinity of the airport where we've trained them.
When teaching shorts and softs, go beyond
the minimum-if possible, seek out a grass
or other type of off-pavement strip. It'll open
up a student's world to possibilities and
gaining proficiency in a true soft or short field
environment will make the learning experience
more fun, memorable, and intense. If you, a CFI,
have never flown off airport, invest in some
instruction yourself. The process of learning
to fly off airport will you make you a more
proficient, skilled, and safer pilot, and your
students will benefit from your dedication to
developing your own stick-and-rudder skills.
