CFI TIPS

Setting up the radios on the ground is good practice for using the comms
and navs. I will also want to determine what kind of handheld GPS/
weather combination I should have on my iPad and how to set up the
cockpit to be most effective for my use. This is, after all, not a rental that I
have to re-configure each time I fly. Learning how to use the new avionics,
as well as understanding and complying with new rules such as ADS-B,
will be essential. My flight instructor will be someone familiar with the
make and model of aircraft I'm purchasing. That is not only for safety
reasons, but also so she can provide me with tips and techniques relevant
to that specific plane.
The flight itself will be a typical cross-country flight, during which I plan
to become familiar with flying the aircraft, communicating and navigating
with the instruments and backups available to me, and emergency
procedures. We'll do some approaches as well as several takeoffs and
landings. En route I expect we'll find some time for the inevitable flight
review slow flight and stalls. Technique for the specific airplane will develop
over time. As do humans, every airplane has its own personality and quirks.
I look forward to getting to know its personality as we develop what I hope
to be a very long relationship.

One of the benefits of such a long flight is the decision making that I'll have
the opportunity to put into practice, for example decisions that pertain
to weather patterns along the east coast and complex airspace. I'll be
taking vacation time from my job to go on this flight, so if we are delayed
by weather, mechanical issues, or any other unforeseen situation, a safe
decision will need to be made rather than rushing to get home and back to
work. This will be priceless real-life practice for avoiding get-there-itis on
the many flights in our future.
As CFIs, I think it's an honor when another pilot asks us to be a part of
fulfilling their dream, and often that means initial or advanced flight
instruction. I hope if you are asked to fly with a new aircraft owner as they
ferry their plane home that you will jump at the chance. And, whether your
own dream is aircraft ownership, another rating, or a flight to a favorite
vacation destination, I strongly encourage you to pursue that dream. Just
please do so safely.
