DPE ANSWERS FOR STUDENTS AND CFIS
EDITOR'S NOTE:
The following is a compilation of questions
from CFIs, students, and checkride applicants
answered by designated pilot examiners. This
forum intends to provide a healthy and helpful
discussion platform for CFIs and applicants
who are preparing for their checkrides' oral and
practical test portions. It may also serve to help
enhance the applicants' checkride experiences
and promote continued learning. Email
cfinewsletter@aopa.org to share
your questions.

Q

HOW MUCH DOES THE WRITTEN
TEST SCORE INFLUENCE THE ORAL
TEST PORTION? FOR EXAMPLE, IS THERE
A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE FOR THE
APPLICANT WHEN SCORING HIGH ON
THE WRITTEN?
The score is less important. Designated
Pilot Examiners (DPEs) look at the areas
of deficiency to test on. Those are areas your
CFI should have reviewed with you and the
examiner has to ask you about.

A

For example, an applicant who scored 98 but
memorized the written exam answers from
a test prep app is more of an issue than an
applicant who scored 78 but studied hard to
learn the material. In many cases, applicants
with high scores who memorized answers will
be unable to answer the same questions during
the oral test. It's important for applicants to
study and learn the material instead of just
trying to memorize items.

Q
A

IF I BOTCHED A MANEUVER CAN
I REDO IT?
Technically, no. A fully botched maneuver
cannot be allowed to be "retried" if it is
clearly unsatisfactory. The ACS (and PTS)
indicates that an examiner cannot allow an
applicant to be consistently out of standards. But
an examiner may "continue testing" if the quality
of the performance is in question. For example,
making positive corrections if you are a little off
goes a long way. A couple small variations for
which an applicant identifies his or her errors and
fixes them may prompt a DPE to allow continued
testing. It is a bigger issue when an applicant
makes a mistake and then just sits there not
correcting it, or when an applicant consistently
exceeds maneuver tolerances. Those situations
will not help accomplish a successful checkride
outcome.
