Checkride

Q

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SCHEDULE
A CHECKRIDE WITH THE EXAMINER AND
WHO SHOULD INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO
THE EXAMINER?
In some cases, the flight school's
dispatcher will schedule the checkride. In
most cases it's probably preferable if the CFI
introduces the student to the examiner. This
also helps alleviate some of the trepidation a
student may have in contacting the examiner.

A

That said, many students will call examiners
directly when they are ready to schedule the
checkride, since they will know their own
schedule best. Your instructor or flight training
provider may have a couple of examiners they
know work locally and/or are familiar with
their aircraft. In absence of a recommendation,
or if you are looking for more scheduling
options, you can also find a DPE using the FAA's
Designee Locator Search at https://designee.
faa.gov/#/designeeLocator.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Q

ON MY COMMERCIAL CHECKRIDE, THE
DPE TOLD ME THAT THE FAA MIGHT
CALL ME TO GIVE AN EVALUATION OF THE
DPE'S PERFORMANCE.

I WAS SURPRISED. DO ANY OF THE DPES
INCLUDE THIS IN THEIR BRIEFING AND WHY
DOES IT HAPPEN?
Not only is this common, it is required!
The FAA performs annual observations
of DPEs to make sure they uphold standards-
some of this is done in person, but it is
often completed with candidate interviews
(typically via phone). So, contacting applicants
is one way for the FAA to get meaningful
feedback on how the checkride was conducted.
If you get a call, please talk with the FAA staff
member or call them back and provide honest
feedback to the best of your recollection.

A

Q

HOW DO DPES FEEL ABOUT
CANDIDATES WHO TALK THE EXAMINER
THROUGH THEIR AERONAUTICAL DECISION
MAKING (ADM) PROCESS?
Great! This shows insight and forward
thinking by those candidates and it
demonstrates they are ahead of the airplane and
in control.

A

PEARLS OF WISDOM FOR APPLICANTS:
* Relax, breathe, and fly the airplane
* Have an airworthy aircraft-know if
something is not working if it's okay to fly
* Own your checkride-you're the pilot in
command
* Be in charge, be confident in yourself, be prepared
