CFI'S POINT OF VIEW
IN THESE TIMES OF INCREASED DISTANCE LEARNING, VIDEO MEETINGS,
AND REMOTE STUDIES, I FEEL IT IMPORTANT TO REVISIT SOME BASIC
RULES OF PROFESSIONALISM IN THE AVIATION WORLD. It may be the

fact that we are not corresponding in person as often-or many of us use
abbreviated language in our multitude of daily texts-but as a CFI, I have
seen professionalism in several areas wane. Professionalism should not
and cannot be abbreviated. If a pilot becomes complacent and chooses
to not be 100 percent professional, issues will arise either during flight
training, flight planning, or the flight itself. In the end, the way a pilot
chooses to conduct him or herself will follow them throughout their career.
We all know that aviation is a small world-a fact that has always seemed
so ironic to me considering many of us pilots fly all around the world and
often choose different work paths. Many conversations I have been a part
of when meeting a fellow pilot follow a similar format: "Oh, you are from
there? Do you know Joe? I used to fly with him at ...." (fill in the blank).
Similarly, I can recall pushing back from a gate in a hectic KLGA push
when ground control queried the aircraft behind me if they could pass
only to hear my favorite past flight instructor respond "affirmative." Yes,
aviation is a small world.
I now spend my days teaching ground courses and performing
administrative work for an aviation school. I interact and receive daily
emails from students. Many of the emails that I receive from students are
not written in a professional manner; some are far from professional. As a
CFI, I think it important to stress to our students that professionalism in
this career is of the utmost importance, both in the airplane and out.
Professionalism should start on Day One. It is the duty of the CFI to
instill in their students the need for professionalism-from preflighting,
to communicating on the radio, to writing their professor an email about
