IN RETROSPECT, PERHAPS THE DECISION TO BUY OUR
FIRST AIRPLANE DURING A NEW ENGLAND WINTER AND
IN THE MIDST OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC WASN'T THE
BEST DECISION MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE MADE. But in

Speaking of cost, once the planned work was complete, a
test flight was performed and the left mag was identified
as needing to be replaced. When the mechanic took a look,
he discovered that both mags needed to be replaced. An
unexpected expense. Now we really knew what it was like to
own an airplane.

There were two areas that needed to get up to speed-
airplane maintenance and pilot proficiency. In both
instances, there was much planning, preparation, decision
making, and learning involved.

With the airplane ready for its long flight home, it was time
to focus on the next hurdle-mentally prepping myself
for my first flight back in the left seat after two long years
away. I had already resigned myself to the fact that it just
wasn't feasible to accompany the ferry pilot, who I'll call
Mike, for the flight from Ohio to New Hampshire. COVID
restrictions and the need to be flexible on dates made that
an unrealistic option. So, Mike would fly solo, and as soon as
the famously unpredictable New England weather showed a
window of favorable conditions, the plan was set in motion.
The pilot would leave early in the morning on a Saturday in
late January, fly to New Hampshire, spend the afternoon
flying with me for my flight review, and depart the next day.
The overarching theme was that there was absolutely no
pressure. If the weather deteriorated, Mike would land and
we would go to Plan B. Safety first-always.

November it was done, we were excited, and it was time to
start aircraft ownership on the right foot.

Before buying the 1966 Cherokee 140, we had conversations
with a mechanic and identified some work that we would
have done on the plane before it left its current state of
Ohio for its new home in New Hampshire. The Cherokee
was in good shape and had a fresh annual, so much of the
work was minor. An item we agreed was essential was
the installation of shoulder harnesses. I've read too many
accident reports in which the pilot was injured-or worse-
because shoulder harnesses had not been installed. The
safety benefit far outweighed the additional cost.

IT WAS TIME TO START AIRCRAFT OWNERSHIP ON THE RIGHT FOOT.
THERE WERE TWO AREAS THAT NEEDED TO GET UP TO SPEED-AIRPLANE
MAINTENANCE AND PILOT PROFICIENCY.

After a long day of flying, an unscheduled weather-related
stop in Pennsylvania, and a landing at an airport 50 miles
from the intended destination due to the weather, Mike
finally arrived. We were optimistic about our plans for
the following day, despite the forecast for gusty wind
conditions. Our primary goal was to relocate the airplane
to my home airport, 5B9, with its single 2,511-foot-long
