runway. Secondarily, I hoped to complete a flight review. Lastly, Mike
needed to catch an airline flight back home that afternoon so he would be
ready for his day job on Monday morning. This was going to be a busy day!
Fast forward sixteen hours. By the time we were holding short of runway
36 at LEB, ready for takeoff, the winds were 320 at 17, gusting to 23. Did I
mention I hadn't flown since my last flight review and the rust was really
caked on? But I felt at home in the left seat of my 'new' Cherokee and I was
ready to fly. However, shortly after takeoff, a gust lifted the left wing and I
didn't hesitate to hand off the remainder of the takeoff to a proficient pilot. It
was a bumpy ride but once we were above 4,000 things smoothed right out
and we were on to airwork. Steep turns, stalls, slow flight, wow it felt good
to be back (and, eventually, maintaining heading and altitude).
I had completed the ground portion of the flight review by taking a
FIRC a few months prior, but that didn't stop Mike from quizzing me
about airspace, power settings, weather, and more. He did a great job of
instructing in a way that treated me as a peer while also understanding
that I was not a proficient, confident pilot. I was a rusty CFI and it
showed. It was obvious from the takeoff that I would not be doing any
landings that day, and my flight review would not be completed. There
was no pressure, so I enjoyed the hour-long flight, chipped away at the
rust, and got to know my airplane.

Skipping ahead to the end of the story-Mike made an incredible landing at
my tiny hometown airport, the beautiful Cherokee was tucked away safely
in her hangar, and I've found a local flight instructor to fly with for as many
flights as it takes to complete my flight review and regain proficiency.
When I think of that cold January flight, it was definitely one of the
best flights in my 25+ years of flying. It took planning and flexibility, I
learned about the local weather patterns and my airplane's handling
characteristics, and I gained a new respect for my own personal safety
minimums. Constant learning is what makes aviation so challenging and
satisfying, and every flight is unique. I am so fortunate to be an aircraft
owner with many more learning adventures ahead, and I will continue to
chip away at the rust and hopefully never again go so long without flying. If
only it would stop snowing!
