DPE ANSWERS FOR STUDENTS AND CFIS
EDITOR'S NOTE:
The following is a compilation of questions
from CFIs, students, and checkride applicants
answered by designated pilot examiners. This
forum intends to provide a healthy and helpful
discussion platform for CFIs and applicants
who are preparing for their checkrides' oral and
practical test portions. It may also serve to help
enhance the applicants' checkride experiences
and promote continued learning. Email

SHOULD THE CFI BE AVAILABLE ON THE
SCHEDULED CHECKRIDE DAY?

Absolutely! It shows his or her
commitment to the student, which is
important. Also, it allows the DPE to contact
the CFI if there's a need to fill out missing
paperwork or provide needed information.
Ideally, the CFI should be at the checkride to
support his or her student. A CFI that is present
on the day of a test can many times remedy
documentation hiccups that would otherwise
cause a test to be unable to proceed. The CFI
doesn't need to be there sitting around during
the whole test but being there at the beginning is
certainly a best practice.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON AREAS
OF KNOWLEDGE DEFICIENCY AMONG
INITIAL CFI APPLICANTS?

A

One of the biggest deficiency areas for
initial CFI applicants is the ability to apply
regulations in scenario situations for experience
and training requirements. The administrative
requirements of training often cause incorrectly
provided training or lack of documentation of
training. This results in missing experience or
training requirements toward ratings or certificates.
Understanding if the certification is an initial effort
for a certificate or rating, an add on category or
class effort, and what the appropriate requirements
for these considerations are, regularly results in
difficulties on an initial CFI practical test.
Another major area of knowledge deficiency relates
to building scenarios for knowledge training of
their applicants. Understanding how to train and
evaluate their students to higher levels of learning
through scenarios is commonly a weak area of
demonstration on the initial CFI certificate testing.
