CHART CHALLENGE
WHERE THE WILDLIFE LIVES
BY MACHTELD SMITH

IT MAY BE TEMPTING TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT
WILDLIFE FROM THE AIR, BUT DIRECT FLYOVERS
OR MULTIPLE PASSES OVER SENSITIVE WILDLIFE
AREAS CAN HARM THE ENVIRONMENT AND EVEN BE
UNSAFE FOR YOU. That's where special conservation

National Wildlife Refuge

areas come in. Familiar to most pilots are national
park, wilderness, and wildlife refuges shown on
VFR aeronautical charts with blue dots inside a blue
solid border. Similarly, magenta dots inside a solid
magenta outline represent overflight prohibition
zones over wildlife and habitats harboring threatened
or endangered species in some of the most diverse
and bountiful marine environments found off the
California coast.
While not FAA airspace restrictions, these NOAAregulated areas dictate you fly at least 1,000 agl-or
2,000 agl depending on the zone's specifications-above
all charted National Marine Sanctuaries, coastal areas,
and other sensitive environments to protect these
special wildlife habitats from aerial disturbance.

NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries

According to NOAA's Office of National Marine
Sanctuaries, " Marine mammals react negatively to
low-flying aircraft and circling, or multiple passes,

are disruptive to the natural behavior of marine
mammals. " In addition, they say that, " Low flying
aircraft disrupt seabird nesting activities and cause
adults to flee from and abandon their nests, which
can break and knock eggs from the nest, or leave eggs
and chicks exposed to predators. Monitoring data
has shown that high levels of disturbance, including
frequent mild disturbances or a single severe event,
can cause complete breeding failure of a seabird
colony, and/or result in colony abandonment. "
So, love nature and do your best to respect birds and
mammals by complying with the NOAA overflight
prohibition zones. Best of all, the wildlife thanks you.
