CFI TOOLS
All joking aside, for the sake of safety and concise
position reporting, make sure your students
understand how to effectively communicate at both
towered and nontowered airports. There's nothing
more frustrating for both pilots and controllers
than to not know the intentions of a pilot and
what his or her current position is in relation to
approaching or departing the airport. So, how do
you teach your students (and for that matter a pilot
who needs a refresher during a flight review)?
As a supportive instructor you gently guide
your students to use phraseology and best radio
communication practices and you then let
them handle as much communication as they
can safely process before and during the flight
and taxiing back to the hangar. But there are
times, such as a very busy traffic pattern at the
airport, whether towered or nontowered, that
won't allow your student to practice good radio
communication. So, as the CFI you'll take over to
make sure everyone communicates for safety.
To help ease the pain of struggling on the
frequency, introduce your students and clients
to the AOPA Air Safety Institute's interactive
online course called Say It Right: Mastering
Radio Communications. This course takes

the pressure off teaching these skills while
flying, and it will guide them at their own pace
through the principles of proper radio etiquette
to improve clarity in radio transmissions.
The course covers these elements and more:
*	Best practices before pressing
" push-to-talk "
*	Avoiding pitfalls of ineffective communication
*	Radio operation techniques and tips
*	The essence of the four Ws
*	How to communicate at towered and
nontowered airports
*	Airspace communication requirements

Also, please remind your students and clients that
ATC wants to help-controllers will be of great
assist if a pilot has a problem and is not sure how
to handle it. Any pilot who thinks they might have
an emergency should say so. The reassuring voice
at the other side of the mic will provide priority
handling and immediate assistance such as
diverting to the closest airport.
So, help your students and clients say goodbye
to mic abuse that clogs the frequency and
statements that disrupt clear communication.
Effective radio communication reduces pilot
workload and stress and enhances safety; it's an
important skill to acquire-and one to hone.

*	Using radio-based services
*	Calling ATC for help in an emergency
For clients who have been flying for some
time, Say It Right will help them kick bad
habits while learning new techniques. Audio
examples cover many specific in-flight scenarios,
and video advice from air traffic controllers
provides the insight and knowledge they need
to communicate effectively and overcome any
bouts of mic fright. They'll be able to relax and
communicate like a pro.
